A benching is a reason to reassess the active five, not a guarantee that a replacement can be fielded immediately. First check the event’s roster rules and deadlines. Then define the departing player’s responsibilities, compare eligible candidates for role and team fit, and give the new lineup time to integrate.
1. Check the event rules before choosing a replacement
Valve’s general Counter-Strike 2 Tournament Operation Requirements define a roster as five specific athletes. For ranked tournaments, invite continuity criteria include at least three participating athletes from the invited roster on the invite date playing in each event match, alongside any other applicable invite criteria. The requirements version that applies is the one current at the tournament’s Additional Information deadline.
Rules differ by organizer, tournament, and stage. Check the current event rules and instructions for roster submission deadlines, continuity requirements, substitute eligibility, and any regional assignment or invitation conditions. Also establish the outgoing player’s status: benched, released, or still registered. Those statuses should not be assumed to have the same registration consequences.
Valve Majors
The Counter-Strike Major Supplemental Rulebook requires a Major team’s registered roster to match its invited roster, or Core Lineup. A team may optionally register one coach and one substitute. If used to replace a core player, the substitute must not change the Core Lineup’s Regional Assignment. The rulebook also says that once a team reverts to its Core Lineup, it may not substitute again for any reason; if another replacement is needed, it must play shorthanded or forfeit.

ESL Pro Tour example
ESL Pro Tour rules illustrate why teams need to check the specific event. The July 2026 Update #2 changelog describes a final roster deadline set by tournament administration, usually 14 days before the first match. It describes a roster of five starters, up to five substitutes where applicable, and one coach where applicable; emergency additions are handled case by case. These details apply to that ruleset, not automatically to other CS2 events. Read the current ESL Pro Tour Counter-Strike Rulebook 2026 Update #2 changelog and the relevant event’s instructions before acting.
2. Define what the team needs to replace
Do not reduce the opening to “find someone with similar stats.” Write down the departing player’s contribution across the roster, including:

- In-game role and responsibilities in different rounds or situations.
- Map-specific duties and how much of the team’s setup depends on them.
- Communication load, including information-sharing and coordination.
- Leadership contributions, such as calling or helping the team make decisions.
Then decide what the remaining four can absorb and what requires a dedicated replacement. This avoids hiring for a role label alone when the actual gap may include several duties. It is a practical team-planning approach, not an official Valve or ESL selection formula.
3. Compare candidates against the same criteria
Use a consistent comparison for every candidate. The sources do not establish a validated scoring system or weighting; set priorities according to the role gap and competitive context.

4. Make the lineup and responsibilities clear
Before the new player competes, agree on the active five and specify who owns each role, map duty, and relevant in-game decision. Make clear how the new player’s responsibilities will be reviewed so that adjustments do not depend on assumptions. Communicate the change to the roster and tournament administrators, and complete the organizer’s registration steps by the applicable deadline.

A new player needs time to learn the team’s communication, routines, and decision-making. A study by Weiwei Zhang, Goran Muric, and Emilio Ferrara examined professional CS:GO tournament data using two natural experiments. It found that individual and collective performance initially declined after a player switched teams, then gradually recovered (study record, May 19, 2022). This supports planning for adjustment; it does not predict how long a particular CS2 roster will need or guarantee the same outcome.

Schedule practice and review after the change, and assess performance over a reasonable sample rather than judging the fit on one result. Use those reviews to identify whether the issue is role allocation, coordination, or another part of the transition, then make responsibilities explicit again if needed.
