Use Samsung Wallet to manage supported payment cards and make payments; use Secure Folder to keep files or a separate copy of an app behind its own lock. They solve different privacy problems, so neither is a universal winner. Samsung describes safeguards for both, but the available material does not establish a direct, independent comparison of their security.

What Secure Folder does
Samsung describes Secure Folder as a separate encrypted space protected by Knox. It can hold files and apps, and adding an app creates a copy rather than moving the everyday app into a different mode. The copy can use its own account, settings and data, which is useful if you want, for example, a separate sign-in for a financial or messaging app. You must sign into the account you want to use inside that copy. Lock and recovery matter
Secure Folder has its own PIN, password or pattern. Samsung’s support guide says account-based reset must be enabled during setup if you want to use a Samsung account to recover access after forgetting those credentials. Without that option, forgetting the lock can leave you unable to get back into the folder; Samsung gives removing and setting up a new folder as the alternative.
Backups and transfers have limits
Samsung Canada’s guide, updated December 17, 2025, says new Secure Folder backups are no longer supported. It says older backups may still be restored and documents transfer using Smart Switch. Do not assume a current cloud backup exists for new contents; check the guide and menus for your model and software version before relying on a transfer or restore route. What Samsung Wallet does for payment privacy
Samsung Wallet combines payment and other digital-credential functions, but which items it supports varies by market and device. Samsung’s announcement described payment cards alongside examples such as IDs, boarding passes and keys; those examples should not be read as a guarantee that every item works everywhere. Current regional Wallet support is the better guide to local availability. Samsung’s Wallet announcement.
How the card token is used
- Adding a card: Samsung says card details are encrypted and sent through Samsung to the issuer’s payment network for approval. The issuer may require a one-time password. Samsung says a new token is generated when a card is added.
- Paying: You authenticate with a fingerprint or Wallet PIN. In Samsung’s described payment flow, the merchant receives a token rather than the card number, and the payment network verifies it. Samsung describes the token as device-specific and a substitute for sensitive card information. Samsung’s Wallet security explanation and Samsung Wallet FAQ.
That protection is narrower than anonymity. Samsung’s support explanation says the payment network and bank have transaction information, and Samsung’s regional Wallet privacy notice lists payment and device/service information among data categories associated with Wallet. Tokenization limits exposure of the underlying card number to the merchant in the described payment flow; it does not mean the issuer, bank or network cannot associate a payment with you. What to do if your phone is lost
Samsung says SmartThings Find can be used to lock a missing device, making Wallet data inaccessible, or erase the device’s data. Use the current SmartThings Find flow for your account and device. Samsung separately notes that Wallet erasure on a watch cannot be backed up; that watch-specific caveat should not be generalized to every phone backup scenario. Neither service is guaranteed to work identically on every Galaxy device. Samsung says Secure Folder availability varies by device; Wallet functions also vary with factors such as country or region, device, carrier, firmware and card issuer.
