His comparison between similarly sized channels today and about a decade ago is a personal recollection, not proof that Twitch-wide chat activity has declined.
What Shroud said about quiet Twitch chats
In a video identified by contemporaneous reporting as “Is Twitch Dying?”, Michael “shroud” Grzesiek described how silence in chat affects the person streaming. Dexerto reported his words: “But as a streamer, when you look at chat and nothing’s said, it’s very depressing to be honest,” followed by, “It just like chips at you.” The video is available at YouTube; the quotations here are verified against Dexerto’s reporting rather than an independently checked video transcript.
Shroud said he had no issue with lurkers—viewers who watch without posting. His point was about the feeling a streamer may have when they look at chat and find it silent, not a complaint that quiet viewers should participate.
What his comparison does—and does not—show
Shroud compared Twitch channels with roughly 200–400 viewers now with similarly sized channels about ten years ago. He recalled that chat used to move constantly and said he sees more people watching quietly today. He also said larger streamers are less affected because they have enough regular chatters to keep conversation going. These are his observations, not results from a measured comparison over time.

No platform-wide, long-term measure in the available reporting establishes whether chat-message rates have fallen among channels of that size. Viewer counts and hours watched also cannot answer that question by themselves: a person can watch without typing, and a chat can be active without representing every viewer’s experience.
What Twitch’s 2026 viewing figures say
Twitch’s September 9, 2026 State of Gaming report says viewers watched more than 8.6 billion hours of gaming content on Twitch from January 1 through September 1, 2026. Twitch says its general report data is global and that hours-watched figures are rounded. That is evidence of substantial gaming viewing on the service during that period; it does not measure how many messages viewers sent or whether chat felt lively.

The report also describes Drops activity, a distinct measure of participation:
- Viewers watched 1.6 billion hours of Drops-enabled streams, up 46% compared with January 1–September 1, 2025.
- Forty million users participated and claimed Drops, up 15% against the same 2025 period.
Those figures indicate activity around Drops-enabled streams and rewards. They are not a measure of ordinary chat use or community quality, and they do not confirm or refute Shroud’s account of quiet chats.

Why lurkers are not the same as bots
Twitch’s stated position also separates silence from inauthentic viewing. In a 2025 Dexerto interview, Twitch Chief Product Officer Mike Minton said lurkers count as real viewers and that Twitch’s tools compare multiple signals to identify bots rather than treating silence in chat alone as evidence. Shroud also spoke about Twitch’s sense of community. Dexerto reported that he agreed with a viewer’s suggestion that community mattered more in the past, praised guild members who travel to BlizzCon to meet, and criticized TwitchCon, saying, “TwitchCon needs to lock the f**k in.” Those comments express his opinion; they do not establish an independent assessment of either event.

In an earlier April 2026 report, Shroud argued that creators now need YouTube videos and TikTok Shorts to attract views, and that gaining Twitch viewers used to be easier when fewer people streamed Counter-Strike. How to read the “depressing” claim
- It is a creator’s account: Shroud described the emotional effect of looking at a quiet chat.
- It is not a Twitch-wide trend measurement: His recollection about 200–400-viewer channels has not been established by a longitudinal chat statistic in the cited material.
- Silent viewers still count: Shroud did not blame lurkers, and Twitch says silence alone is not its test for bots.
- Viewing totals answer a different question: Twitch’s 2026 hours watched report measures viewing, not chat messages or how engaged viewers felt.
