Open your TV’s Live TV section, channel guide, or built-in streaming app and look for free channels. Many smart TVs surface free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) alongside regular apps; it is not one universal feature, so availability depends on your TV model, software, country, and service partners. You’ll need an internet connection, and “free” means no subscription fee for the content—not that it is ad-free.
What are free streaming channels?
FAST services deliver scheduled live channels over the internet without a paid subscription. Many also offer on-demand shows or films. Unlike a traditional antenna channel, these streams use your home internet connection; unlike a cable package, they are generally supported by advertising.
On a television, FAST may appear as a Live TV tab, a channel guide, or a manufacturer’s app. The name and location vary by platform. Some channel guides combine programming from the TV maker and partner services, while other channels may require opening or installing a separate app.
Where to find them on your TV
- Connect the TV to the internet. Use Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Internet streaming will not work without a connection.
- Open the home screen and look for Live TV or a channel guide. Also check the TV maker’s streaming app, such as Samsung TV Plus or LG Channels.
- Browse the free channels. Check whether the service offers a guide, on-demand titles, or both, and whether a particular channel asks you to install an app or sign in.
- If you cannot find the service, check your model and country. Consult the TV maker’s support information for your model and region; availability and channel lineups can differ by software version and location.
Examples of built-in free TV services
| Service or platform | What the official information says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung TV Plus | Samsung describes TV Plus as a free, ad-supported streaming TV and video-on-demand service. Its newsroom page discusses integration into Samsung TVs from 2016–2023, but that historical scope is not a current compatibility list. Samsung’s service update. | Confirm support for your TV model and country rather than assuming every Samsung TV has the service. |
| LG Channels | LG’s US page says the service is free and requires no registration or login. It lists 2016-and-later LG Smart TVs, along with Android, iOS, and web access, and says a network connection is needed. LG cautions that the lineup may be limited by the TV’s operating system. LG Channels. | Check the TV’s operating system and the US service page for availability; the cited details are for the US. |
| Google TV Live tab | Google’s April 11, 2023 announcement described more than 800 free channels in the US Live tab, combining Google channels with services including Tubi, Plex, Haystack News, and Pluto TV. Some channels may require a separate app. This is a dated announcement, not a current channel count for every device or country. Google’s announcement. | Check what appears in your Live tab and whether a channel requires its provider’s app. Google says live content is subject to availability and partner services. Google TV and Android TV availability information. |
| Roku TV | Roku describes Roku TV as providing access to hundreds of free live channels, alongside free and paid content from the home screen. Streaming requires Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Roku TV. | Check what is available for your television and location before considering an additional streaming device. |
These examples are not interchangeable promises of availability: services vary by TV platform, model, country, software, and content partners. Their channel counts also refer to different dates, regions, and definitions, so they should not be used as a like-for-like ranking.

Do you need to buy a streaming device?
Not necessarily. If your compatible smart TV already offers a suitable free streaming service, start there; Roku, for example, says Roku TV has streaming built in. An external HDMI streaming player is an option only if your TV cannot run a service you want or its built-in selection does not meet your needs. Check the specific device’s compatibility and service availability before buying; an internet connection is still required.

What “free” does—and does not—mean
- No subscription fee for the cited free content: that is the key distinction from subscription streaming packages.
- Advertising is expected: FAST services are ad-supported, so free viewing is not necessarily ad-free.
- Access can still have conditions: a service may be limited by country or TV operating system, and an individual channel may require a separate app or account.
