Genshin Impact: best for fantasy exploration and story
Choose Genshin Impact if you want a colorful fantasy world to explore at your own pace. Xbox describes it as a free-to-play open-world adventure RPG for Xbox Series X|S. Its Store listing says you can explore the nations of Teyvat, roam freely, fight enemies, solve puzzles, and follow a single-player story.
The base game is free, but the Xbox Store listing notes optional in-game purchases, including random items. Game Pass is not required for co-op play. Xbox says Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can also access cloud gaming and in-game bundles; those are subscription benefits, not requirements for playing the game on console. The game supports cross-play and cross-progression across Xbox, PlayStation, PC, Android, iOS, and the Epic Games Store, according to Xbox’s 2024 launch announcement.

Where Winds Meet: best for Wuxia open-world action
Where Winds Meet is the better match if you want action-led exploration with martial-arts combat and a historical Chinese setting. Xbox describes it as a free-to-play open-world RPG rooted in Wuxia. Its setting is tenth-century China during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, with exploration and political intrigue alongside combat. Xbox Wire’s June 9, 2026 announcement lists it as available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and cloud.
NetEase Games reported more than 80 million players worldwide in that announcement; this is a publisher-reported figure, not an independent audit. Eric Zheng, Head of Where Winds Meet Publishing, called it “an epic free-to-play Wuxia open-world ARPG.” See the Xbox Wire announcement for the launch details.

Free co-op alternatives that are not confirmed open-world picks
Warframe
Warframe suits players who want free sci-fi co-op action, evolving stories, events, and character customization. Xbox describes it as a narrative-rich co-op action game in which players command different Warframes and defend the Origin System. That description does not confirm an open-world structure, so treat it as an adjacent action recommendation rather than a strict open-world choice.
The First Descendant
The First Descendant is a free-to-play third-person co-op action RPG shooter. Xbox’s description supports solo play and co-op boss battles, making it a fit for players who favor character-based shooting and cooperative combat. The Xbox listing does not call it open world, so it is not as direct a match for exploration-focused play as Genshin Impact or Where Winds Meet.

Is Wuthering Waves available on Xbox?
Xbox Wire announced on April 7, 2026 that Wuthering Waves, a free-to-play open-world action RPG, was coming to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC later in 2026. That announcement gives a year-level release window, not confirmation that the game has launched. Check the announcement and the Xbox Store for current availability before treating it as playable on Xbox.

Free-to-play means you can access the base game without buying it; it does not mean every optional item, add-on, or service is free. Genshin Impact’s Xbox Store listing specifically identifies in-game purchases, including random items. Xbox says Game Pass is not necessary for its co-op play, while Game Pass Ultimate adds cloud access and in-game bundles. Availability and catalog listings can change, so use the relevant Xbox Store page to confirm current access for your console or service.
