If you want a new Mac without paying for a refurbished MacBook Air, start with Apple’s MacBook Neo. For Windows, consider the Dell XPS 13 (2026); for browser-first work, the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024) may fit if its sale price is below $600. Your software needs and the exact configuration matter more than a blanket ranking.

Do you need macOS?
If you rely on macOS applications, Apple’s MacBook Neo is the direct new-Mac alternative in this shortlist. Apple announced it at $599 in the US, with $499 education pricing, and said availability would begin March 11, 2026. Treat those as announcement figures rather than a guarantee of today’s price or stock. Apple’s March 2026 announcement.
Apple also claims up to 16 hours of battery life and up to 50 percent faster web browsing than the bestselling PC with the latest shipping Intel Core Ultra 5. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results. Apple’s announcement.
Will 8GB of memory be enough?
RTINGS says the Neo’s fixed, non-upgradeable 8GB is workable for typical schoolwork and light multitasking, but leaves little room for heavier multitasking or demanding creative work. If you routinely keep many applications and browser tabs open, or use resource-intensive creative tools, that limitation may make the Neo a poor fit. RTINGS budget laptop guide.

The cited Windows option is the Dell XPS 13 (2026). TechRadar reports a weight of 2.2 pounds. RTINGS under-$600 guide and TechRadar laptop guide.
Compare the specific Dell configuration, especially memory and storage, rather than assuming every model at an advertised price has the same specifications. The available recommendations do not establish a head-to-head test of the Dell against the Neo or a refurbished Air.

Choose a Chromebook only if ChromeOS supports your work
RTINGS names the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024) its best Chromebook under $600, while listing a $700 US base MSRP and noting that it is often on sale. It is therefore a sub-$600 candidate only when the sale price brings it into that range. RTINGS under-$600 guide.
Before buying, check whether every application you depend on is available for ChromeOS or has a suitable web version. If you need software exclusive to Windows or macOS, this Chromebook is not a substitute. TechRadar laptop guide.

How to compare these options with a refurbished Air
- List your required applications. Decide whether you need macOS, Windows, or whether browser-based work on ChromeOS is enough.
- Match memory to your workload. The cited Neo and Dell configurations raise an 8GB memory caveat; check the exact model and whether its memory can be upgraded.
- Compare the real checkout price. Treat education or student pricing as conditional, and the Acer’s under-$600 fit as sale-dependent. Confirm the current price and configuration before purchasing.
- Evaluate the refurbished unit itself. Compare its exact specifications, condition, warranty, and return terms with those of the new laptop. A refurbished label alone does not tell you whether it is a better value.
For context, an Apple US Certified Refurbished listing checked in 2026 showed a 13-inch M5 MacBook Air with 24GB memory and a 4TB SSD at $2,799. That is one high-capacity listing, not evidence of a typical affordable refurbished-Air price. Apple states that Certified Refurbished products carry a one-year limited warranty. These recommendations draw on separate reviews and guides, not one shared test of all three laptops, so there is no evidence-based universal winner.
