The safest way to clean wireless earbuds is to follow the instructions for the exact model and clean each part—ear tip, mesh, body, contacts, or case—only as its maker allows. For models that call for dry cleaning, use a soft dry brush or cotton swab gently; keep liquids and sharp tools away from openings, and let the earbuds dry completely before use or charging.
Before you clean: identify the model and the part
Cleaning methods are not interchangeable across brands or even across generations. Check the model-specific support instructions first, then identify what you are cleaning: a removable ear tip, speaker mesh, outer body, sensor, charging contact, or case port. In particular, do not assume a liquid that is permitted for one model or surface is safe for another.
- Check whether the ear tips are designed to come off; some open-type earbuds have no removable tips.
- Use only the tool and moisture level the manufacturer permits for the exact area.
- Keep liquid out of speaker openings and charging ports, and avoid pushing tools into ports.
How to clean Galaxy Buds with removable tips
For several Galaxy Buds models, Samsung recommends dry cleaning with a cotton swab or soft dry brush. Remove the rubber tip carefully, without forcing it, and keep the earbud oriented as Samsung directs. Samsung cautions against holding earbuds upright while cleaning and against liquids such as alcohol or soapy water, which can carry debris or liquid inside. - Gently slide off the removable tip. Stop if it resists; do not pull or twist with force.
- Use a cotton swab or soft dry brush to remove accessible debris from the speaker mesh and tip. Do not use metal or wire-bristled brushes, which can damage the mesh or internal components.
- Wipe the inside of the tip with a soft, dry cloth.
- Clean accessible sensors and charging contacts with a cotton swab. If contacts get wet, dry them thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth.
- Align the tip over its latch and reinstall it as directed. Make sure the earbuds are dry before wearing them or putting them in the case.
Debris on the mesh or inside a tip can reduce audio quality. Keep the cleaning gentle: do not scrape the mesh or push material into openings.

Open-type and other specialized designs
First check whether there is a removable tip at all. Samsung describes Galaxy Buds3 as open-type and without earbud tips, while Galaxy Buds3 Pro have tips. Do not try to remove a part that the model does not have. Samsung’s model-specific guidance also warns against harsh chemicals such as alcohol and acetone for Buds. How to clean AirPods mesh and body
AirPods 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods 5 mesh
Apple’s UK support guide, published September 18, 2026, describes a wet cleaning procedure for the indicated meshes on AirPods 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods 5. It names a Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit or a method using micellar water containing PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, distilled water, a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush, two small cups, and a paper towel. This procedure applies only to the named models and mesh areas; it is not a general wet-cleaning recipe for other earbuds or other AirPods parts. For that specified mesh procedure, Apple directs users to brush in circles for about 15 seconds, repeat the brush-and-blot sequence three times per mesh, rinse the brush with distilled water, and repeat the steps using distilled water. Allow the AirPods to dry for at least two hours before use or charging.
AirPods body and case
For the AirPods body, Apple advises wiping with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water after exposure to substances such as soap, shampoo, lotion, perfume, solvent, detergent, sunscreen, oil, or hair dye, then drying with a soft lint-free cloth. Do not put AirPods under running water or use sharp objects or abrasives.

For debris near a case charging port, Apple says to use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush on the debris around the port. Do not put anything into the charging ports, and keep liquid out of them. The mesh procedure’s two-hour drying instruction is specific to the procedure described above; follow the relevant model instructions for other surfaces.
Can you use alcohol or wash silicone ear tips?
Do not use alcohol, soapy water, or another cleaner unless the instructions for your exact model and the part you are cleaning explicitly allow it. Samsung warns against alcohol and soapy water while cleaning its earbuds and cautions against harsh chemicals such as alcohol and acetone for Buds. Apple’s cited directions allow a slightly water-dampened cloth for the AirPods body in the specified circumstances, but that does not authorize wetting the mesh, ports, or another model.

If the ear tips are designed to come off, clean them separately only by the method their manufacturer permits. Samsung’s cited method is to wipe the inside of the removable tip with a soft dry cloth and use a cotton swab or soft dry brush for accessible debris. Do not assume a removable silicone tip can be washed or soaked; the guidance cited here does not establish a universal washing method.
Tools and mistakes to avoid
- Use: a soft dry cloth, cotton swab, or soft dry brush where the model’s instructions recommend them. Apple names the Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit for its specified mesh procedure.
- Avoid: force when removing tips, metal or wire brushes near mesh, sharp objects, abrasives, and tools pushed into charging ports.
- Keep dry: speaker openings, charging ports, and contacts unless the exact instructions explicitly permit moisture for that area.
- Wait before use: return earbuds to use or the case only when they are dry. For Apple’s named mesh procedure, the stated wait is at least two hours; Samsung’s cited instructions require dryness but do not set that same timed interval.
