A regular DVD rip should not be assumed to contain separate left- and right-eye views. Next, identify whether the file is MVC, side-by-side (SBS), or top-and-bottom (TAB), then match that layout to what your player and display can handle.
First, check whether the disc and rip contain 3D video
“DVD” and “3D Blu-ray” are not interchangeable. The documented stereoscopic ripping workflow discussed here applies to 3D Blu-ray, not to an ordinary DVD. Check the disc’s format or label, then inspect the resulting file’s video streams and layout before changing playback settings.
MakeMKV describes its role as transferring disc content into an MKV container without changing or compressing the video and audio. Its FAQ also confirms support for 3D Blu-rays and points to HandBrake as an optional compression step. Ripping or remuxing and converting a stereoscopic format are therefore separate tasks. If the source is a 3D Blu-ray
Check whether the 3D video stream was selected during the rip. A MakeMKV support discussion identifies the relevant stream as “Mpeg4-MVC-3D.” If that stream was not selected or preserved, the resulting file may contain only the ordinary 2D view. MakeMKV forum discussion of the MVC stream

If the source is a DVD
MakeMKV can analyze DVD titles and chapter structures automatically; its manual mode gives advanced users more control if automatic selection is wrong. Checking the selected title or segment may fix a rip of the wrong content, but it does not establish that the DVD contains stereoscopic 3D video. MakeMKV DVD manual
Identify the file’s 3D layout before changing playback settings
An MVC-preserving file is not the same input as a side-by-side or top-and-bottom encode. A 3D-aware application can convert MVC from a 3D Blu-ray into a frame-compatible layout such as Full or Half SBS, TAB, or frame-sequential MKV. Do not simply toggle a generic “3D” setting without checking the file format: playback mode needs to match the input layout. Exact menu names and compatibility vary by device, and the available documentation does not establish model-specific instructions. If choosing between preserving MVC and converting, weigh compatibility with your player and display, whether the workflow re-encodes the video, the resolution and quality implications of the chosen layout, and subtitle handling. There is no universal best format for every setup.
Separate missing depth from a stretched or squashed picture
A video that has no apparent depth points to a stereo-stream, file-layout, or playback-mode problem. A picture that looks geometrically stretched or squashed is a different issue: the aspect ratio may be interpreted incorrectly. Correcting aspect ratio cannot restore stereoscopic information that is absent from the file.

DVD video can use anamorphic encoding, where stored frame dimensions differ from the intended display dimensions. HandBrake’s guide explains this relationship and how aspect-ratio handling affects displayed geometry. Check the file’s intended display ratio and the player’s aspect-ratio setting when the shape is wrong; do not treat that adjustment as a fix for missing 3D depth. HandBrake anamorphic video guide

With an SBS encode, subtitles may need to be duplicated or positioned for both views and rendered at the appropriate stage. The BD3D2MK3D community thread describes this as setup-dependent. A practical troubleshooting order
- Identify the source: confirm whether it is a 3D Blu-ray or a DVD.
- Inspect the video: determine whether the rip contains MVC, SBS, TAB, or only a conventional 2D view.
- For a 3D Blu-ray rip, check stream selection: verify whether “Mpeg4-MVC-3D” was selected and retained.
- Match playback to the file: use a player and display mode that handle the file’s MVC or frame-compatible layout, or convert the file to a layout your setup supports.
- Diagnose shape separately: if the image is stretched or squashed, check aspect-ratio handling rather than expecting it to add depth.
- Check subtitles separately: for SBS, confirm that the subtitle workflow serves both views as required by your playback setup.
