There is no disclosed universal formula or shared set of weights for “good deal,” so an agent’s label is a starting point—not proof that a price is the lowest available or that the offer suits you.
What an AI shopping agent may consider
The estimate depends on both the offer and the shopper. OpenAI says ChatGPT shopping results can use the query and context, including memory or custom instructions. Its Shopping Research feature may ask about preferences such as brand, size, performance, comfort, style, or price. A low price is not good value if the item misses a requirement that matters to you.
To compare offers, an agent also needs to identify the product and seller. OpenAI says results can draw on structured product metadata and other third-party content; merchant listings may use data from merchants or other third parties. Its description of merchant ranking names availability, price, quality, and whether the merchant is the maker or primary seller as factors, but does not publish a complete ranking recipe. OpenAI’s explanation of shopping results describes these inputs and the limits of what is disclosed.
How to judge the price context
Compare the offer with recent prices
A price history can help answer whether today’s price is unusually low, but its time window and market matter. In a May 1, 2026 article, updated June 24, 2026, Amazon described price-history views for 30, 90, and 365 days. Amazon said the feature was available in the U.S., UK, Canada, and India, with 365-day insights rolling out to the U.S., UK, and India. Those availability details apply to Amazon’s feature, not every shopping agent. Amazon also reported that more than 50 million customers had checked price history since its 2024 launch, and that customers checked it three times per month on average; both are company-reported figures. Amazon’s price-history guide gives example questions including “Has this item been on sale in the past 30 days?” and “Is this the lowest price recently?”

Check what a discount is measured against
A discount percentage is only meaningful in relation to its baseline. Amazon says its deal savings use validated reference prices, including List Price and Typical/Was Price. It describes List Price as an MSRP or other validated price, and Typical/Was Price as the median price paid on Amazon over the preceding 90 days, excluding limited-time deal prices. That is Amazon’s stated method for its deal presentation; it should not be assumed to represent a long-run market average or another retailer’s pricing method. Amazon’s explanation of its deal reference prices sets out those definitions.
Compare the whole offer, not just the headline price
When weighing actual alternatives, use a consistent checklist. This is a practical way to assess an offer, not a published scorecard used by any platform.

- Checkout cost: compare the current price after shipping, taxes, and fees where those amounts are available.
- Like-for-like product details: check size, weight, quantity, condition, core features, and included items. A smaller package or different model can make a lower listed price misleading.
- Price history: note the time period and market, and confirm that the history is for the same item or a genuinely comparable one.
- Seller and availability: verify who is selling the item and whether it is in stock.
- Fit and terms: weigh the product against your stated needs, and review return and warranty terms when they affect the purchase.
OpenAI’s Shopping Research guide describes comparisons involving price, features, reviews, and shopper constraints, and advises checking details such as final price, taxes, fees, shipping, availability, size, color, and retailer policies.
Give the agent a specific comparison goal
A vague question like “Which deal is best?” leaves room for the agent to optimize for the wrong thing. State the attribute that defines value for you and the details needed to compare it. For example: “Compare the price per 100 grams for the same product size, include shipping, and exclude sellers without the item in stock.” For electronics, name the required model, features, condition, and any must-have terms. Amazon lists “Is this a good price?” and “What’s the price history?” among example prompts, but a more specific request can make your own priority clearer.

A September 23, 2026 arXiv preprint by Davood Wadi and Yu Ma, “Shopping by algorithm: How agentic AI deploys human heuristics as a surrogate consumer,” reports Tool-Lab experiments with eight commercially deployed LLMs from three providers. Under the tested conditions, when details were hidden behind costly tool calls and prompts were vague, agents could omit information needed to calculate unit prices and choose suboptimally. More specific goals mainly preserved diagnostic search and choice optimality. These are bounded experimental findings, not evidence that every live shopping assistant behaves the same way. The paper abstract describes the study.
One result in that paper illustrates why results should not be generalized across systems: in a purchase-volume test of Google’s tested Pro model, increasing bag volume from one to 250 was associated with absolute-price objective statements rising from 38% to 84%, diagnostic acquisitions falling from 5.55 to 4.22, and choice optimality falling from .80 to .35. Those figures describe that model in that experiment, not shopping agents as a whole.

Verify the retailer’s offer before buying
Shopping information can be incomplete or out of date. OpenAI says prices and shipping information displayed in shopping results may lag behind updates, and its Shopping Research guide warns that research can return incorrect or outdated price, stock, or discount details. Check the retailer’s page for the final price, fees, shipping, availability, and any relevant return or warranty terms. The retailer’s current offer—not the agent’s summary—is the one to rely on at checkout.

Platform descriptions disclose selected inputs and features, not every step in an individual estimate. The cited sources do not establish a universal deal score, exact factor weights, or consistent scoring across platforms. An agent may be useful for narrowing options and surfacing price context, but a discount label alone does not establish that the item is at its best-ever price, is the market’s cheapest offer, or is the right choice for your needs.
