A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Before using a second-hand MacBook Air, make sure the previous owner has cleared Activation Lock, protect your files with a backup, and choose a reset method that matches the Mac’s hardware and macOS version. Then migrate your data during setup or later with Migration Assistant. You can skip migration at first without losing the option to transfer files afterward.
1. Check that the previous owner released the Mac
Start the Mac and proceed through setup far enough to see whether it asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account. If it does, Activation Lock is still active. Ask the seller to remove the Mac from their account before you continue; erasing the computer by itself may not clear the lock. Apple explains how Activation Lock works on Mac, including when an account password or device passcode is required to erase or reactivate a device.
Do not treat a seller’s successful erase as proof that the Mac is ready for a new owner. Resolve any Activation Lock prompt with the seller before moving your own data onto it.
2. Decide whether to erase it, and use the right method
A clean setup is often a sensible choice for a used computer, but the erase procedure depends on the Mac’s processor, security hardware, and macOS version. Check the model and installed macOS before choosing a route; Apple’s steps can differ by model.

Apple silicon or an eligible Intel Mac
Erase Assistant is available on Apple silicon Macs and on Intel Macs with the T2 Security Chip running macOS Monterey 12 or later. Apple says Erase Assistant signs out of Apple services, turns off Find My and Activation Lock, and removes accounts, files, settings, installed apps, and volumes. Follow Apple’s instructions for erasing a Mac and confirm that the Mac meets the eligibility requirements before using this option.
Other Intel Macs
Older Intel models may not offer Erase Assistant. For those Macs, use the erase-and-reinstall process for that model through macOS Recovery, following Apple’s macOS erase and reinstall guidance. Do not assume that instructions for an Apple silicon Mac apply to an older Intel Air.

3. Protect the files on the source computer first
Before erasing or migrating from your old computer, make sure you have a safe copy of anything important. Time Machine can back up the whole Mac or selected files and requires an external hard drive. Apple’s Mac backup and restore guide explains the setup.
iCloud can keep selected categories—such as photos, files, notes, passwords, contacts, and calendars—in sync across devices, but it is not a complete backup. Apple states, “iCloud doesn’t back up your entire Mac.” Treat synced data as a way to access selected items, not as your only protection for everything on the old computer.

4. Choose how to move your data
Migration Assistant can transfer data while you first set up the MacBook Air or later, after setup is complete. Apple supports migration from another Mac, a Time Machine backup or startup disk, and a Windows PC. Use the source option that matches what you actually have:
| Source | How to use it | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Another Mac | Choose the Mac-to-Mac option in Migration Assistant on the new and old Macs. | For wireless migration, connect both computers to the same network. A direct cable connection is often faster, but Apple does not specify one universal cable type for every MacBook Air pairing. |
| Time Machine backup or startup disk | Choose the relevant backup or startup-disk source in Migration Assistant. | A Time Machine backup requires external storage. If you already have a suitable backup, it can serve as the transfer source. |
| Windows PC | Choose the Windows PC option and use the Windows Migration Assistant version that matches the macOS on the receiving Mac. | Check Apple’s current Windows Migration Assistant instructions and download guidance for the appropriate version. |
| iCloud | Sign in and allow selected synced categories to appear on the Mac. | iCloud sync is selective and does not replace a full-Mac backup or an equivalent Migration Assistant transfer. |
5. Run Migration Assistant during setup or afterward
During first-time setup
When Setup Assistant offers to transfer information, choose the option for a Mac, Time Machine backup, startup disk, or Windows PC, depending on your source. Follow the on-screen prompts on both computers or select the appropriate backup. Apple’s MacBook Air migration guide covers transfer from another Mac.

After setup
If you want to start using the Air before moving everything, skip migration in Setup Assistant. You can open Migration Assistant later and begin the transfer then; skipping the initial prompt does not close the option.
Connection and waiting time
For a wireless Mac-to-Mac transfer, put both computers on the same network. Apple notes that connecting the computers directly with a cable is often faster than wireless transfer, although the right cable depends on the two specific models. A large transfer can take hours and may appear to pause, particularly when moving data from Windows; allow it to continue rather than interrupting it just because progress is slow.

6. Finish setup and verify before retiring the old copy
Complete account and macOS setup, then open the folders and apps you rely on and check that important files are present and usable. Pay particular attention to documents you need soon and to any data that may have been stored outside the folders you selected for backup or migration. Keep the old computer or backup until you are satisfied that the files you need are available on the Air; this is a practical precaution, not a guarantee that every migration includes every item.
