The exact controls depend on your Galaxy model, One UI version, and camera mode.
How to adjust exposure on a Galaxy phone
Samsung’s guidance is to change exposure from the Camera app’s quick controls:
- Open Camera.
- Tap Quick controls.
- Tap Exposure.
- Move the slider toward brighter or darker, then take the photo.
Samsung says the exposure icon highlights when you change the setting. The adjustment resets when you close Camera, so check it again in a later session. Names and locations can vary by model and software version. Samsung provides a similar quick-control slider for the Galaxy S25 family in its US camera feature guidance; its India exposure instructions were updated September 23, 2026.
Why the HDR switch may be missing
Do not assume every Galaxy camera has the same HDR menu. A Samsung Members Galaxy Camera FAQ posted August 16, 2023 says automatic HDR is always active in standard camera mode on One UI 4.0 and later. It also says models before the S22 may have an Auto HDR or HDR (Rich Tone) option in Camera settings. These are version-scoped directions, not a guarantee about every model or later software release.

Samsung Members identifies Pro mode as a way to take photos without HDR and says Camera Assistant or Expert RAW may provide Auto HDR controls on supported setups. Availability depends on the phone and installed apps. Check your model and One UI version before following a menu path; Samsung also cautions that camera settings vary by device.
Why a saved photo can look brighter or different
HDR is one possible reason the saved rendering differs from what you expected. Samsung explains that HDR captures three images at different exposure levels and combines them into one final image. That processing can retain detail in both bright and dark areas of a mixed-light scene, changing the balance compared with a single exposure. Samsung describes this process in its 2020 Galaxy camera explanation; it is a description of the technology, not an independent performance test or a guarantee of a particular result.

Exposure compensation is a direct way to ask the camera for a brighter or darker capture. If the image seems to change only after you open it, first identify where: the live Camera preview, the saved image in Gallery, or another viewing app. The available Samsung guidance does not establish one universal cause for every Galaxy photo that looks different after saving.
Choose a control based on the result you want
- Just need a brighter or darker picture: use the Exposure slider in Quick controls, then review the saved photo.
- Want more control over capture: where supported, Pro Photo mode lets you adjust ISO, shutter speed, white balance, and exposure. Samsung says it can also save RAW images for later editing.
- Want to avoid HDR: Samsung Members says Pro mode does not apply HDR; Camera Assistant or Expert RAW may offer Auto HDR controls on supported setups. These options are not universal.
- Want to retain detail in a high-contrast scene: HDR combines exposures to balance brighter and darker areas, though the final rendering may differ from a single exposure.
Samsung’s overview of Galaxy HDR and Pro Photo features describes the available manual controls and RAW capture. Features depend on the device and camera app.

Check the actual saved file and gather device details
Samsung says camera photos and videos are saved automatically to Gallery, where they can be viewed, edited, and managed. Open Gallery to assess the saved image rather than relying only on the live preview; Samsung’s Galaxy camera modes and settings guidance describes Gallery as the save destination.
For a specific brightness problem, note the phone model, One UI version, camera mode, and whether the change appears in the preview, Gallery, or another app. Those details matter because HDR and exposure controls vary across devices and software versions.
