Yes—Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is worth considering if you want a fast, feature-rich kart racer for local parties, cross-platform online races, or build-focused progression. It offers several ways to race, from split-screen cups and custom friend lobbies to ranked competition and solo time trials. Its documented structure is race-focused; the official feature descriptions here do not establish a story campaign. Whether it is a good fit therefore depends more on how you like to race than on a narrative.
What you get in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
Nintendo’s product listing describes 24 tracks and 15 CrossWorlds, with 23 Sonic characters, 45 original vehicles, 70 gadgets, and 23 items. These are the figures in Nintendo’s listing, not independent measurements. Nintendo’s product page also describes vehicle customization and gadget-driven options that give players ways to shape their racing setups.
SEGA’s launch announcement describes crossplay and online modes including World Match, Festival events, and Time Trial. The game launched on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch on September 25, 2025; Steam and Epic Games Store versions followed on September 26. Which modes can you play?
Grand Prix
Grand Prix is the cup-style option for racing across a series of events. Nintendo lists local split-screen play for the Switch version, while SEGA’s launch information confirms local play more generally. The exact player setup depends on platform and hardware.

Race Park
Race Park is the party-style mode, with rule and team variations. Nintendo lists it as local split-screen on Switch; SEGA’s product information says Race Park supports both local and online play. It suits groups who want to vary the rules rather than stick to standard races. SEGA’s product page describes the mode.
World Match
World Match is online competitive racing with rank progression and up to 12 players, according to SEGA and Nintendo. It is the clearest fit if you want to compete online and see a rating advance over time.
Friend Match
Friend Match lets you race online with friends using custom settings. Xbox’s official listing describes 12-player lobbies with custom rules, and SEGA later added an option for multiple rounds. The lobby description is specific to the Xbox listing; check the options on your platform for the configuration you plan to use. Xbox’s listing details its lobby feature, and SEGA’s December 2025 update covers the multiple-round option.
Time Trial
Time Trial is the solo, time-focused option. It is listed among the game’s modes by both SEGA and Nintendo, making it a straightforward choice when you want to work on a course without a full lobby.

Legend Competition
SEGA added Legend Competition in a December 2025 update as a regular event mode. Later updates also refer to World Championship Qualifiers within the competitive ecosystem, so event formats and availability can change over time. The December update announcement describes Legend Competition.
How local and online multiplayer work
Crossplay lets players on supported platforms race together, according to SEGA’s launch announcement. Exact player counts vary by platform, so Nintendo’s figures should be treated as specific to its listing rather than applied to every version.

For online play, the practical distinction is between matchmaking and a group you organize yourself: World Match is the ranked competitive option, while Friend Match is for custom lobbies. Race Park adds party-style rule variations, and Time Trial does not require other players.

What progression adds
Progression is built around vehicle and gadget customization, rating gains in World Match, event participation, unlocks, and Donpa Tickets. Nintendo says players can unlock gadgets and level a kart. The result is a racer with ongoing goals beyond finishing individual races, especially if you enjoy experimenting with different setups.
Some unlock details have shifted through updates. SEGA’s December 2025 patch notes say certain gadgets require Gadget Plate rank thresholds and that Donpa Tickets can purchase some gadget kits previously distributed as Festival rewards. The patch notes describe those changes.
Competitive balance and availability also change over time. SEGA’s March 19, 2026 patch described online balance adjustments and changes to item and course behavior; its June 24, 2026 update added gadgets, a Donpa Ticket bonus chance in World Match and Legend Competition, and raised gadget availability by rank. For exact current unlocks or balance, consult the latest official notes rather than relying on an older threshold. March 2026 update notes and June 2026 update notes cover those changes.
A mode-unlock condition mentioned by SEGA—finishing the first four-race Grand Prix to unlock World Match and other modes—was for the 2025 Open Network Test, not a confirmed description of the full game’s current onboarding. SEGA’s test announcement explicitly concerns that test.

Which platforms and editions are available?
SEGA announced the original release for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and Epic Games Store. For Nintendo Switch 2, SEGA announced a physical edition for March 26, 2026. The announcement says its content does not differ from other platforms and Nintendo Switch save data can transfer to the Switch 2 edition. SEGA’s Switch 2 announcement also described the Werehog Pack as an early-purchase bonus; that does not establish that the offer is still available.
Who should buy it?
- Good fit: You want local split-screen races, cross-platform online competition, custom lobbies, or solo time trials.
- Good fit: You like progression through ratings, events, unlocks, and gadget-based builds.
- Think carefully: Your main reason for buying is a story campaign. The official feature descriptions cited here document modes and racing progression, not a narrative campaign.
- Check before choosing a platform: Local player counts, wireless play, and accessory needs differ by platform; Nintendo’s published counts apply to its Switch listing.
SEGA said the game had sold over 1 million units worldwide in a statement published October 23, 2025. That is a dated sales figure, not a current total. SEGA’s announcement gives the original claim.
Events and crossover content are time-sensitive. On August 25, 2026, SEGA announced a free Axel update scheduled for August 26 alongside a limited Festival.
