No official announcement confirms 54 new Pokémon. The Pokémon Company introduced three first partner Pokémon—Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua—in its announcement of Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves. A separate report published September 28, 2026, puts the number of Pokémon shown or expected in the games at 54, including returning species.
What did the official Pokémon announcement confirm?
The Pokémon Company announced Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves on February 27, 2026, as new entries in the series. Its announcement named three first partners: Browt, the Bean Chick Pokémon; Pombon, the Puppy Pokémon; and Gecqua, the Water Gecko Pokémon. These are the three new Pokémon explicitly introduced in the announcement materials covered here.

The games are scheduled for simultaneous worldwide release in 2027, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s US store page also lists Pokémon Winds as a Switch 2 exclusive planned for 2027; it does not establish a price or current retail availability: Nintendo’s Pokémon Winds store page.
Where does the number 54 come from?
A report published September 28, 2026, titled “Pokémon Winds and Waves Confirmed Pokémon List Now at 54,” describes a compiled roster count of Pokémon shown or otherwise expected in the games. It distinguishes returning Pokémon from new species and says the three starters are the only brand-new species on its list. That makes 54 a secondary compilation’s total—not an official count of newly created Pokémon and not a number announced by The Pokémon Company.

What is known about the games so far?
The official description sets the games in an open world of windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves. It says Pokémon in the region have developed unique ecosystems and that players can team up with Pokémon to overcome difficult terrain and forces of nature. The announcement does not establish specific traversal, underwater, or battle systems, so those details should not be inferred from the setting description.
