“Starter” and “rotation player” describe how a coach uses a rookie in games. “Two-way contract,” “assignee,” and “G League call-up” describe contract or roster status. They are separate categories: a rookie can be a reserve on a standard NBA contract, play regularly while on a two-way deal, or appear in the G League while still under a standard NBA contract.
Starter and rotation player describe game usage
Starter
A starter is usually one of the five players in the opening lineup. The label tells you how the coach deploys the player, not how secure his contract is or whether he will finish the game.
Rotation player
A rotation player regularly receives minutes as part of the team’s game plan. A rotation player may start or come off the bench; a rookie can also move into or out of the rotation as the coach adjusts lineups and playing time. These are ordinary basketball descriptions, not formal NBA contract categories.
What a two-way contract means in 2025-26
A two-way player has an NBA contract and is attached to an NBA team and its G League affiliate. Under the NBA G League’s 2025-26 rules, an NBA team may have up to three two-way players in addition to a maximum of 15 players on standard NBA contracts. A two-way deal may cover one or two seasons.

The stated 2025-26 annual salary for a two-way contract is $636,435, equal to half the zero-years-of-service NBA minimum. If the player signs during the regular season, the salary is prorated for the remainder of that season.
Season-specific roster limits
In 2025-26, a two-way player may be on his NBA team’s Active List for no more than 50 regular-season games. There is also a team-level limit of 90 aggregate Under-Fifteen Games: a regular-season game in which the team has fewer than 15 players signed to standard NBA contracts. Each two-way player active in such a game counts toward that total.

For 2025-26, two-way players do not accrue “Days of Service” for either team, so the previous 45-day service limit does not apply. Generally, a player must not have more than four NBA years of service at any point during the two-way deal. The league’s rules page describes a narrow one-year exception for a player with four service years who spent a full NBA regular season on a team roster without playing in an NBA game. These limits and exceptions are season-specific; check the applicable season’s rules rather than relying on older summaries.
Postseason eligibility
A two-way contract by itself does not make a player eligible for an NBA playoff roster. Two-way players may travel and practice with the NBA team during the play-in and playoffs, but they cannot be on its playoff roster while they remain under two-way status. A player signed or converted to a standard NBA contract before the team’s final regular-season game may be eligible for the postseason roster; the NBA’s CBA 101 material and the NBA Constitution and By-Laws provide relevant contract and roster context.

How the NBA and G League pathways differ
| Term | What it describes | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | Game role | Usually begins the game in the opening lineup; does not specify contract status. |
| Rotation player | Game role | Regularly receives playing time; may start or come off the bench. |
| Two-way player | Contract status and affiliate relationship | Has a two-way NBA contract and may play for the NBA team and its G League affiliate within the applicable season’s rules. |
| Assignee | Assignment from an NBA roster to the G League | Remains under an NBA contract; the NBA team retains exclusive recall rights. |
| G League call-up | Contract transition | A player on a G League contract signs an NBA contract with an NBA team. |
The NBA G League FAQ distinguishes assignments from call-ups. Assignment sends an NBA-contracted player to the G League while his NBA team keeps exclusive recall rights. A call-up is the opposite kind of transition: a player on a G League contract signs an NBA contract. Neither G League appearance nor assignment, by itself, establishes that the player is on a two-way deal.
Teams also use routes such as affiliate-player status, draft rights, local tryouts, and G League draft selections. Those are distinct from the player’s game role and may have their own roster rules.

Why rookies play in the G League
The G League gives NBA teams a setting to develop and evaluate players who may need more playing time or a different role than the NBA rotation allows. It is a development route, not a guaranteed promotion ladder. NBA G League reported that 51 percent of players on 2025-26 NBA start-of-season rosters had G League experience, tying the previous season’s mark. That statistic describes experience across NBA rosters; it is not a rookie-specific advancement rate.
The league’s FAQ also reports that 109 NBA players were assigned to G League teams during the 2024-25 regular season and that all 109 were recalled. That season-specific count shows how assignments can fit into NBA teams’ player-development plans, but it does not establish a particular player’s future role or playing time.

How to read a rookie’s role correctly
- For game usage: Look at whether the rookie starts and whether he receives regular minutes. A reserve can still be a rotation player.
- For contract status: Identify whether he has a standard NBA contract, a two-way contract, or a G League contract.
- For development status: Check whether he is currently with the NBA team or assigned to its G League affiliate.
- For eligibility: Apply the rules for the specific season, including service-year, active-list, and postseason limits.
Keeping those questions separate avoids common misreadings: starting is not a contract category, playing in the G League does not prove two-way status, and regular rotation minutes do not by themselves define a player’s roster pathway.
