Commercial Earth-imaging satellites publish useful specifications, but public sources do not establish an equivalent, current performance specification for spy satellites. The comparison that can be made responsibly is therefore between documented commercial systems and the limits of what is publicly known about intelligence systems—not a definitive ranking of their resolution or what they can identify.

What the public comparison can—and cannot—show

Commercial Earth imaging is not one technology. Publicly listed systems include optical sensors that record visible or other spectral bands and synthetic aperture radar (SAR), which forms images from radar returns. Those sensors collect different information and have different interpretation limits.

By contrast, the official sources cited here do not provide a current, comparable technical inventory for intelligence satellites. They cannot substantiate a precise spy-satellite ground resolution, revisit pattern, spectral capability, operational orbit, or object-identification threshold. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) materials describe civil and commercial Earth observation, while NASA’s page covers Airbus commercial data. That difference in public disclosure is not evidence of any particular classified capability.

For commercial figures below, “best resolution” means the specification shown in the USGS commercial imagery table, not a guarantee that every image will have that detail or that a particular object can be identified. Resolution also needs a sensor and mode: a panchromatic value is not directly interchangeable with a multispectral or shortwave-infrared value.

How the commercial systems compare

The following are examples, not an exhaustive market list. The figures are vendor or system specifications as listed by USGS or NASA’s Commercial Smallsat Data Acquisition (CSDA) program; they are not independent measurements of intelligence satellites.

System Sensor and listed resolution Collection or access detail
Maxar WorldView 1/2/3 Optical: panchromatic (PAN) 0.31 m, multispectral (MSI) 1.24 m, and shortwave infrared (SWIR) 3.7 m, as listed by USGS. USGS lists tasking through specified channels; availability and delivery depend on the route and system.
Planet SkySat Optical PAN/MSI; USGS lists 0.50 m as best resolution. Tasking and access are subject to the options listed by USGS.
Planet Doves Optical multispectral; USGS lists 3 m as best resolution. USGS describes Doves as always collecting rather than taskable through the same route.
Airbus Pléiades Neo Optical: 0.3 m PAN, 1.2 m MSI, and six multispectral bands, according to NASA CSDA. NASA’s Airbus overview reports daily global revisit for the Pléiades Neo optical constellation.
Airbus Pléiades (earlier generation) Optical: 0.5 m PAN and 2 m MSI, according to NASA CSDA. NASA’s Airbus overview reports daily global revisit for the Pléiades optical constellation.
Airbus SPOT Optical: 1.5 m PAN and 6 m MSI, according to NASA CSDA. NASA’s Airbus overview reports one-to-three-day revisit.
Capella SAR; USGS lists 0.25 m as best resolution. Tasking is listed as available by USGS.
ICEYE (US) SAR; USGS lists 0.5 m as best resolution. Tasking is listed as available by USGS.
Umbra SAR; USGS lists 0.25 m as best resolution. Tasking is listed as available by USGS.

The USGS figures are shown in its commercial-imagery table, accessed in 2026; the Airbus figures and constellation revisit descriptions are from NASA CSDA’s vendor page, also accessed in 2026. These pages report specifications, not a promise that a requested scene will be collected successfully or delivered immediately. For current tasking options and terms, consult the USGS commercial imagery access table and the relevant provider.

Why resolution is not the same as “what a satellite can see”

Spatial resolution describes a pixel or sampling scale under a specified imaging mode; it is not an object-identification threshold. A 0.31 m PAN specification, for example, does not by itself establish that an analyst can reliably identify every object smaller than, near, or larger than that scale. The image’s sensor, collection conditions, processing, and the task being attempted all matter. A PAN number also should not be compared as though it were equivalent to an MSI or SWIR number: those bands capture different kinds of information at different listed resolutions.

Nor does a single resolution number summarize the whole system. Spectral bands, coverage, tasking, collection timing, successful acquisition, processing, licensing, and delivery affect whether imagery is useful for a particular mapping, monitoring, or operational need. A table of headline resolutions cannot settle those questions.

Optical imagery and SAR answer different questions

Optical: visible and multispectral detail

Optical systems measure reflected light in panchromatic or multiple spectral bands. Multispectral and SWIR channels can support distinctions that are not conveyed by a single panchromatic image, but their resolution may differ from the PAN specification. Optical collection also depends on suitable illumination and visibility; clouds can obscure the ground.

SAR: radar imaging through cloud and darkness

SAR uses radar rather than relying on reflected sunlight, so it can collect imagery through cloud and at night. That makes it useful when optical visibility or illumination is a problem. The trade-off is interpretation: USGS describes SAR imagery as grayscale and notes speckle noise. Its resolution can also be lower than EO (electro-optical) imagery depending on radar frequency and configuration; the listed commercial examples show why it is not sound to assume one universal SAR resolution.

Metal Earth James Webb Space Telescope 3D Metal Model Kit Fascinations
  • HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
  • NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
  • JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE - 2.75 Sheet Model with a moderate difficulty level. Assembled Size: 4.13 L x 2.75 W x 2.75 H inches. 1:221 Scale. 62 Pieces
  • FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
  • HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.

The strengths are therefore complementary, not interchangeable. Whether SAR or optical imagery is more useful depends on what needs to be observed, the conditions at collection time, and how the resulting image can be interpreted.

Revisit is an opportunity, not a delivery guarantee

A stated revisit rate describes how often a constellation may have an opportunity to image a place; it does not mean that a usable, cloud-free image will be captured at the exact requested moment. It also does not state how quickly the image will be processed or delivered. NASA CSDA reports daily global revisit for the listed Pléiades Neo and Pléiades optical constellations and one-to-three-day revisit for SPOT. Those are constellation descriptions, not guarantees for a specific location, collection request, or delivery deadline.

Access routes differ as well. USGS’s table distinguishes taskable systems from Planet Doves, which it describes as always collecting rather than taskable through the same route. NASA presents its Airbus page in the context of the Commercial Smallsat Data Acquisition program. These descriptions do not establish consumer retail availability, complete licensing terms, or public prices. For an actual project, verify coverage, tasking, access eligibility, licensing, processing, and delivery directly with the applicable provider or program.

What can be said about spy satellites?

The public sources used here do not establish current technical specifications for spy satellites that can be compared like-for-like with the commercial systems in the table. The USGS Earth Observing Satellites Online Compendium describes a civil Earth-observation resource, and the NASA CSDA page describes commercial Airbus data; neither provides a comparable current intelligence-system inventory. The available evidence therefore does not support a precise spy-satellite resolution figure, a specific object-size limit, or a claim that intelligence systems uniformly outperform commercial ones on every imaging task.

It is also misleading to treat “spy satellite” as one sensor category. Optical and SAR systems work differently, and the public commercial examples already span both. Without comparable authoritative specifications for intelligence systems, a numerical winner-or-loser comparison would imply more certainty than the available public information supports.

How to choose imagery for a real task

For mapping, research, monitoring, or another operational use, start with the requirement rather than the smallest headline pixel figure. Check these points before selecting a source:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What must be detected or measured? Define the feature and the decision the image needs to support; do not use a resolution number alone as proof of identifiability.
  • Which sensor fits the conditions? Consider optical bands and visibility needs, or SAR when cloud and darkness are obstacles and radar-image interpretation is suitable.
  • What area and timing are required? Confirm coverage, whether tasking is available, likely collection opportunities, and whether a suitable image is time-sensitive.
  • What does “available” mean? Check the access route, eligibility, license, processing, and delivery terms; a revisit specification is not a delivery service-level commitment.
  • Are the specifications comparable? Keep PAN, MSI, SWIR, and SAR modes distinct, and confirm the product and mode behind each published resolution value.

USGS’s 2024 fact sheet on Earth-observation remote sensing tools provides broader context on systems, trends, and characteristics. The agency says its online compendium receives weekly content updates while the overall application was last updated in October 2024, so an individual record should be checked before relying on it as a current system specification.
