Choose Ultra if its extra detail and wider view cover an area you need to monitor; Pro is the more proportionate fit when 2K and a narrower scene are enough. What is the difference between Arlo Ultra and Arlo Pro?
“Ultra” and “Pro” are product families, not single models. Arlo’s current US catalog lists Ultra 3rd Gen and Pro 6th Gen. Older comparisons may instead cover Ultra 2 and Pro 5S 2K, so check the generation before relying on a specification or feature claim. Ultra is the stronger fit when a specific location would benefit from both its 4K HDR specification and 180° view—for example, when one camera needs to take in a broad approach or outdoor area. The additional resolution is most useful when the detail matters for your intended view; it does not by itself guarantee that a person or object will be identifiable in every recording.

Factor in how you plan to record before choosing it. Arlo says Ultra 4K recording can use cloud or local storage, but each route has requirements described below.
Choose Pro 6th Gen when 2K and 160° are sufficient
Pro offers 2K HDR and a 160° field of view in the current catalog. If that resolution and coverage suit the location, the extra specification of Ultra may not solve a problem you actually have. Confirm the exact Pro bundle and its recording terms: details published for Pro 5 should not be assumed to apply to Pro 6.

Do you need a subscription to record Arlo footage in 4K?
For Ultra, Arlo says 4K can be recorded to cloud or local storage. Arlo’s Ultra recording guidance says cloud recording requires a qualifying Arlo Secure plan. Local 4K recording uses a compatible SmartHub and a local storage device, such as a microSD card or USB device. Check the current plan comparison for your region and confirm compatibility for the exact camera, hub, and storage device before buying.
Arlo also notes that some local 4K live-stream conditions depend on the mobile device sharing the SmartHub’s Wi-Fi network. Local storage is therefore not simply a matter of inserting a drive into any hub and expecting every viewing feature to work identically.

What happens if you do not keep an Arlo plan?
Arlo’s US subscription FAQ says live streaming and two-way audio remain available after a trial without a service plan. It does not establish that cloud recording, saved video history, high-resolution cloud recording, or every detection feature remains available without a subscription. Check the current terms for the camera and account region rather than treating the free functions as a complete recording service. Arlo’s US FAQ explains what happens after a Secure trial ends.
Does Arlo Pro need a hub?
Arlo’s published hub and recording details in the supplied support material apply to Pro 5, not Pro 6. For Pro 5, Arlo says a SmartHub or Base Station is optional for connecting directly to a Wi-Fi router; it also describes local 2K recording through a SmartHub or Base Station. Arlo says the included Secure trial enables 2K streaming and cloud recording on Pro 5, and continued 2K cloud recording after the trial requires renewal.
