For a large skeleton that comes apart, lay it down and follow its own manual to disassemble and pack the pieces; for smaller hanging or animated props, use their product-specific packaging and battery instructions. Keep parts grouped, dry and away from heat or moisture. The right approach depends on how the decoration is built.
How to store The Home Depot’s 12-foot Skelly
The Home Depot’s instructions are specific to its 12-foot Skelly, not every large skeleton. Lay Skelly down before disassembly and take it apart in reverse assembly order. Use its original carton if you still have it, or choose a tote with enough interior room for the longest bones, pelvis and rib cage. A generic tote size label is not enough: check the actual pieces against the container before packing. The Home Depot’s Skelly storage instructions also say to remove the LED-eye batteries and store the decoration where it will not be exposed to heat or moisture.
Group the parts inside the container
In its disassembly guide, The Home Depot shows the leg and arm bones placed inside the rib cage, with the pelvis and head added to the container. Keeping related parts together makes the packed decoration easier to manage when you bring it out again. Check other skeletons’ instructions before packing
Hanging and animated decorations can have different construction, packaging and electrical components, so check the manual for the exact model. For example, a Haunted Hill Farm instruction sheet says to put its decoration back in its original packaging only when it is completely dry, keep it away from heat, and store it in a cool, dry area below 100°F. A manual for a 71-inch animated hanging skeleton recommends its original packaging or a protective container, avoiding direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, and removing batteries before long-term storage. Protect parts and choose a replacement container
If the original carton is gone, compare the container’s interior dimensions with the longest pieces and any bulky parts, then consider whether it can keep those parts grouped and protected in the space where you plan to store it. For the 12-foot Skelly, The Home Depot identifies a plastic tote as a possible alternative, but it must fit the longest bones, pelvis and rib cage. Choose by the actual contents, not a broad label such as “large.”

Padding is optional, not a universal manufacturer requirement. Storage Rentals of America suggests wrapping skeleton bones in bubble wrap before placing them in a labeled bin. Separating pieces with bubble wrap or packing paper may help reduce rubbing and scratches, especially for smaller or delicate decorations; for a large model with its own packing directions, follow those first. Before sealing the container
- Check the decoration’s manual for disassembly, packaging, temperature and battery instructions.
- Make sure the decoration is clean and fully dry if its instructions require this before storage.
- Keep parts grouped and use optional padding where pieces could rub against one another.
- Remove batteries when the product instructions call for it, particularly for long-term storage.
- Store the packed decoration in the conditions its manual specifies, avoiding heat and moisture where instructed.
