AST SpaceMobile’s direct-to-cell system is designed to let an ordinary, unmodified smartphone connect to a BlueBird satellite when a partner carrier’s ground network is out of reach. The satellite uses a large steerable phased-array antenna to provide a cellular radio link, while mobile-network operators contribute spectrum and network integration. AST has reported successful tests, but its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, said the SpaceMobile Service had not launched; the company’s subsequent updates through August described launch and beta preparations, not general retail availability.

How does a satellite connect directly to a regular phone?

AST’s design makes a BlueBird satellite function as a cellular access point in orbit. The phone uses its usual cellular radio rather than a satellite handset, dish, or other add-on. AST says access is intended to require no special phone hardware, app, or software update. Whether a particular phone can connect in practice will still depend on the service, supported spectrum, carrier arrangements, and local authorization.

The basic connection has three parts: an ordinary phone communicates over a cellular frequency; a BlueBird satellite receives and transmits that signal using its large phased-array antenna; and the satellite service integrates with a mobile-network operator’s network. AST describes its system as an extension of carrier coverage, not as a separate consumer phone plan purchased directly from AST.

What the satellite’s antenna does

A phased array is made up of many antenna elements whose signals can be coordinated to shape and steer radio beams. Rather than relying on a small antenna like a handset’s, BlueBird uses a very large array to direct cellular coverage toward areas on Earth. AST says the first-generation commercial BlueBird satellites have a 693-square-foot array; its company materials describe Block 2 arrays as approximately 2,400 square feet at maximum.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Those figures describe antenna area, not the size of one continuously served region. The satellite’s beams form coverage cells, and steering them lets the system target those cells as the spacecraft moves. AST says Block 2’s larger aperture, precision beamforming, and custom AST5000 application-specific integrated circuit are intended to support more focused beams, reduce interference, and increase capacity. The chip’s signal-processing and beam-steering functions are company-described capabilities, not independent performance measurements.

Why spectrum and the carrier matter

The radio link uses spectrum licensed by mobile-network operator partners alongside spectrum AST says it holds. The exact frequencies and permissions vary by market and deployment. In general, lower-frequency radio waves tend to travel farther and penetrate obstacles better, while higher frequencies can provide more capacity; those broad trade-offs do not establish which bands will be used or available in a particular location.

AST says its system integrates with partner mobile networks so service can work alongside terrestrial coverage. A phone may use a ground tower where one is available and the satellite layer where the carrier has enabled it, but actual switching behavior and availability depend on the operator and deployment. Carriers, rather than AST alone, determine consumer plans and pricing.

How does this differ from a tower or a satellite phone?

The useful distinction is what provides the radio access and what equipment the customer needs. A satellite acting as a cellular access point does not make every location continuously covered, and it does not turn an ordinary phone into a conventional satellite handset.

Terrestrial cellular Ordinary cellular phone Phone connects to a ground tower; carrier supplies the mobile network and licensed spectrum. Requires a usable terrestrial network in range.
AST direct-to-cell design Designed for an ordinary, unmodified smartphone, with no separate satellite device. BlueBird provides the satellite cellular access link; AST describes using partner-carrier spectrum and integrating with carrier networks. Intended to supplement carrier coverage. AST’s June 30, 2026 quarter filing said the service had not launched; later company updates through August described beta preparation.
Conventional satellite phone or terminal Dedicated satellite handset or terminal, rather than the customer’s ordinary phone directly connecting to this cellular satellite system. Uses a satellite-specific service and its associated equipment. Not the architecture AST describes for direct-to-cell service; no comparative coverage or performance figures are established here.

What has AST demonstrated, and what do the speed figures mean?

AST lists demonstrations using BlueWalker 3 and BlueBird satellites, including voice, video, and 5G calls, plus tests with AT&T and Verizon in the United States in 2025. In July 2025, the company reported a VoLTE call and SMS using AT&T spectrum and its core network. In October 2025, it reported calls, data, and video streaming with Bell in Canada. These are reported tests and milestones; they do not by themselves establish regular commercial service, consistent quality in all locations, or continuous coverage.

AST’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, reports a peak data speed of 98.9 Mbps directly to a standard, unmodified smartphone in a test with a Block 1 BlueBird. That is a company-reported peak test result, not a promised customer speed.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

AST separately describes next-generation targets of over 150 Mbps per coverage cell and more than 2,000 cells, as well as up to 10 GHz of processing bandwidth for Block 2. These are company-stated capabilities, not interchangeable measures: processing bandwidth is not end-user throughput, and a per-cell target is not a speed guarantee for each phone. The larger antenna and beamforming are intended to support capacity, but real-world performance will depend on the deployment and conditions.

Is AST SpaceMobile available now?

AST’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, stated: “The SpaceMobile Service has not been launched and therefore has not yet generated any revenue.” The company’s second-quarter update described preparation for beta service in 2026, including scaled noncommercial use with strategic operator partners. AST’s FAQ described an initial U.S. beta target with noncontinuous nationwide coverage. Its company launch updates subsequently reported BlueBird 11, 12, and 13 launching on August 5, 2026, after BlueBird 6 in December 2025 and BlueBirds 8–10 in June 2026; those satellite launches are not evidence that retail service is available.

Based on the company information available through August 2026, AST SpaceMobile should be described as preparing for beta use, not as a generally available consumer service. Partnerships or demonstrations involving AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, Rakuten, Bell, or stc do not establish that customers can sign up in each partner’s market. Availability also depends on country-specific regulation, spectrum rights, and carrier agreements. AST reported that BlueBird 7 entered an orbit too low to sustain operation and was de-orbited.

What should a phone owner expect from the idea?

  • No separate satellite phone is the design goal: AST intends the connection to work with an existing, unmodified smartphone.
  • It is a coverage extension, not universal coverage: beams, satellites, spectrum permissions, and carrier deployment determine where and when a connection can be offered.
  • Carrier participation is central: operators contribute spectrum and network integration and set consumer plans and pricing.
  • Test results are not service promises: demonstrations and peak speeds show reported technical milestones, not guaranteed everyday performance or availability.
