Windows Features and Optional features are separate Windows interfaces for managing components—not two names for the same list. Use the classic Turn Windows features on or off dialog when Microsoft’s instructions name a component there, and use Settings’ Optional features page for components listed there. The item you need, along with your Windows version and edition, determines which route applies.
What are Windows Features and Optional features?
Windows Features is the classic dialog opened by searching Start for Turn Windows features on or off. It lets you toggle selectable Windows components that are exposed in that dialog. Microsoft’s virtualization instructions, for example, use it to enable Virtual Machine Platform.
Optional features is a Settings page for viewing and managing optional components or packages. Depending on the Windows version and the feature, users may be able to add or remove items there. Microsoft directs Windows N users to this page to install the Media Feature Pack. Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack instructions give separate steps for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
These screens overlap in purpose, but their lists are not guaranteed to match. A component may appear in one interface without appearing in the other; use the interface named in the instructions for that specific component.

How do you open each interface?

Settings labels and paths can vary by release, so follow the instructions for your Windows version rather than assuming Windows 10 and 11 use identical menus.
Which one should you use?
Look up the component by its exact name and follow Microsoft’s instructions for your edition and release. For example, Microsoft’s Virtual Machine Platform steps use the classic dialog, while the Media Feature Pack steps for Windows N use Optional features.

- Check your Windows edition and version, especially if instructions specify Windows N or a particular release.
- Open the interface Microsoft names for the component. In the Windows Features dialog, select the component and choose OK; in Optional features, select the available item and follow the prompts.
- Restart if Windows requests it. The Media Feature Pack requires a restart even if Windows does not prompt.
If the component is missing, check that the instructions apply to your edition and release, and consider whether device policy restricts feature installation. Availability and preinstallation status differ between Windows versions. Do not assume an absent entry can safely be installed using an unrelated download.
What does “Features on Demand” mean?
Features on Demand (FODs) is Microsoft’s term for an underlying family of Windows packages and capabilities that can be added as needed. Microsoft Learn states, “Features on Demand (FODs) are Windows features that can be added at any time.” FODs are related to the optional components users may manage in Settings, but the term does not simply rename either Settings’ Optional features page or the classic Windows Features dialog.

FODs also matter in Windows servicing and deployment. Microsoft documents adding packages to an online Windows installation through Windows Update or supplying matching offline media when servicing an image. Deployment guidance uses DISM, including the /Add-Capability option. These are technical servicing methods, not a reason to download packages from unrelated sources. Should you remove optional features you do not use?
Microsoft says removing optional features you do not use can reduce the storage required for feature updates. That is a storage benefit, not a promise of faster performance or improved security. Before removing a component, check whether an app, device, or workflow depends on it. Optional-feature sizes and update-space needs vary with the feature and update path; Microsoft’s catalogue describes package sizes as approximate and notes variation by release and Reserved Storage configuration.
