Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor most Windows users, the right choice is to leave Windows Features unchanged unless an app, device, or task calls for a specific component. Enabling or disabling unfamiliar checkboxes is not a proven general speed-up or debloating method. Make a targeted change only after checking that your Windows edition and device support it.
How to decide whether to change a Windows feature
Windows Features contains optional components used by particular apps, development tools, virtualization workloads, and network setups. It is not a checklist of settings that every PC should enable or disable.
- Name the need. Identify the app, device, or workflow that is missing a capability or explicitly requests a component. If nothing needs it, leave the setting alone.
- Check your Windows release and edition. Availability can vary by Windows version, edition, architecture, device, and organization policy. A missing checkbox may reflect a limitation or a different management surface, not a fault.
- Select only the named component. Expand an entry if necessary and avoid enabling a bundle of related options unless the app’s instructions require them.
- Check setup requirements. Some changes may require administrator privileges, installation files, firmware configuration, or a restart.
- Record the original state. This makes it easier to reverse a troubleshooting change. On a work or school PC, follow IT policy and ask the administrator before changing managed networking or virtualization settings.
- Reassess temporary changes. If you enabled an optional component for a one-time task, check whether anything still depends on it before turning it off.
To open the dialog, search Start for Windows features and choose Turn Windows features on or off. Some capabilities are managed elsewhere, such as under Optional Features, or through administrative tools.
Features you may need for a specific task
| Feature | Consider enabling it when | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual Machine Platform | An app or workload you intend to use requires Windows virtualization support. | Check the app’s requirements and whether hardware virtualization is enabled in UEFI/BIOS. Microsoft’s virtualization guide describes selecting the component in Windows Features and restarting if prompted. |
| Hyper-V and related virtualization features | You need to create or manage virtual machines, or run software that depends on the Windows hypervisor. | Support depends on the Windows edition and device. Microsoft says Client Hyper-V is not supported in S mode; on Snapdragon PCs, it is supported with S mode disabled. Check current requirements for your Windows release and app in Microsoft’s Windows in S mode FAQ. |
| .NET Framework 3.5 | A legacy app explicitly requires it. | Microsoft recommends checking for an updated version of the app first. If it still needs the component, select .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0). WCF activation subfeatures are generally unnecessary unless required for development or server administration. See Microsoft’s .NET Framework 3.5 installation guidance. |
| Media Feature Pack | Your PC runs a Windows N edition and you need media technologies or apps omitted from that edition. | Microsoft says to install the pack through Optional Features. Some components may require reinstalling hardware drivers afterward. See the Media Feature Pack instructions. |
| Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) | You administer Windows Server roles, shared folders, quotas, or other remote resources from a Windows client. | Install only the management tools you need. Microsoft documents Windows Features for certain RSAT tools and other installation paths; availability depends on the tool and Windows version. See Microsoft’s RSAT overview. |
| SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support | A specific older server, appliance, or workflow requires SMBv1, and an administrator has confirmed the dependency. | SMBv1 is an older file-sharing protocol. Prefer current protocols where supported; do not enable SMBv1 speculatively. Microsoft documents how to inspect and manage its components in its SMBv1 guidance. |
These examples are not a complete inventory for every Windows build. If an app names a component not listed here, use that exact feature name to find the current instructions for your installed Windows version.

What to know before enabling virtualization
Virtualization lets a Windows device emulate another operating system, such as Android or Linux. To enable Virtual Machine Platform, search Start for Windows features, open Turn Windows features on or off, select Virtual Machine Platform, and restart if prompted. The PC may also need hardware virtualization enabled in UEFI/BIOS; firmware menus vary by manufacturer, so change only the setting your app or Microsoft’s instructions require.
Many Windows devices already have virtualization enabled, so you might not need to change firmware settings. A Windows virtualization checkbox also does not guarantee that every virtualization product is supported on every PC or edition. In particular, Client Hyper-V is unavailable in S mode; Microsoft says it is supported on Snapdragon Windows 11 systems when S mode is disabled.

When .NET Framework 3.5 is the right choice
.NET Framework 3.5 supports applications built for older .NET Framework versions. If an app asks for it, first check whether the publisher offers an updated version using a newer .NET Framework or .NET. If the older app still requires it, select .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) in Windows Features. Do not select the WCF activation options unless a developer or server administrator specifically needs them.
Microsoft’s .NET Framework page flags Windows 11 26H1 and later separately, so follow instructions that match your installed Windows build.

When media features are missing on Windows N
Windows N editions omit specified media technologies, Windows Media Player, and some preinstalled media apps. If you have an N edition and need those capabilities, Microsoft directs users to install the Media Feature Pack as an Optional Feature. Some features may not work until their hardware drivers are reinstalled after installation.
Why a Windows feature may be missing or already enabled
Feature availability can reflect the Windows build, edition, device, or organizational management. Microsoft notes that Windows 11 features can arrive through servicing and controlled rollout; on organization-managed devices, some may ship turned off or be controlled by policy. If a component is absent or its checkbox is unavailable, check your edition and build and consult your organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to force a change through another method.

How to approach legacy file sharing and managed PCs
SMBv1 should be treated as a compatibility decision, not a routine setting. Enable it only when a known older device or service depends on it and the network administrator has confirmed that need. If you are unsure whether a home or business network still has such a dependency, ask its administrator before changing the SMB components.
On a managed computer, policy may control which features appear or whether they can be changed. Check with IT before modifying networking, virtualization, or server-administration components, especially when the PC connects to organizational resources.
