First find where the water is entering; do not assume it came through the spot where it appears indoors. Rain can travel through a window joint or inside the surrounding wall before showing up. Repair only the confirmed failure: caulk belongs on joints designed to be sealed, while flashing and drainage openings must remain able to direct water outside.
Protect the room and record when the leak happens
Catch active water, move nearby belongings, and note when the leak starts, which part of the window gets wet, whether wind drives the rain, and whether water continues after the rain stops. Photograph the interior marks and exterior conditions. These observations help describe the problem, but do not by themselves identify the entry point.
Check for condensation and inspect the window
Water marks, peeling paint or wallpaper, and damage below a window can result from rain intrusion, but condensation can leave similar stains. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recommends monitoring a suspected location to avoid mistaking condensation for a leak. Look for water on the frame and inspect the sash-to-frame and glass-to-sash joints, weather seals, locks, sash operation, tracks, and visible drainage openings.
Inspect the exterior without taking the window apart
From a safe position, check the sill, exterior trim, siding above and beside the opening, and visible head flashing for damage, gaps, or deteriorated sealant. Water can enter above or beside the window and travel through the frame or wall before appearing indoors. A caulk bead near the wet patch may therefore miss the actual path.

Do not remove trim or cladding just to investigate unless you understand how the opening is assembled. Flashing is meant to work with the wall’s drainage plane, not as an isolated surface patch. DOE explains that Properly installed flashing around window and door openings directs water out, rather than into, the wall cavity.

Use a hose test only when it is safe and useful
If the leak is simple to access and testing will not put water into the wall, a gentle garden-hose stream can sometimes help isolate the area. A secondary troubleshooting guide suggests testing a slider in small sections, starting at the lower track and moving upward, with someone indoors watching for water. This is a diagnostic suggestion, not a controlled test or guarantee of finding the source.

- Use low flow, never high pressure, and test one small area at a time.
- Have a helper watch indoors and stop as soon as water appears.
- Do not continue if the test sends water onto finishes or into the wall.
If the source remains uncertain or appears concealed, have a qualified window or building-envelope professional investigate rather than flooding the assembly.
Match the repair to the confirmed entry path
A failed joint meant to be sealed
Remove failed sealant only at a joint intended to be sealed. Prepare the surfaces and apply an exterior window-and-door sealant that is compatible with the window and wall materials, following the product label and window-maker instructions. DOE cautions that no single sealant suits every use and that some joints should not be caulked. Do not cover designed drainage openings or seal a path meant to let water exit.

Blocked or damaged track drainage
Clear debris from designed drainage openings and check the track and seals for damage. Keep drain openings clear; caulking them shut can trap water. Slider troubleshooting can also involve damaged seals or tracks, poor installation, or defects in flashing or siding, so clearing debris will not fix every leak.
A leak at the rough opening or flashing
If water is entering between the window and rough opening, or through failed flashing, a lasting repair may require removing trim or cladding and correcting the flashing layers. For a new opening, DOE describes a sequence of sill-pan flashing, window installation, side flashing over the pan, top flashing over the side flashing, and integration with the wall’s drainage plane. Existing assemblies differ; follow the window maker’s details and use a qualified installer when access or integration is needed. Self-adhered flashing membrane is an installation material for this kind of work, not a cosmetic patch.

Signs of moisture behind the finish
Recurring leaks, stains below the window, peeling finishes, soft or rotted trim, or other signs of moisture inside the wall may point to concealed damage. Surface caulk will not establish whether framing or the wall cavity is wet. DOE notes that further investigation, which may include moisture measurement, can be needed to diagnose concealed leakage.

Stop DIY work and seek a qualified window or building-envelope inspector or repair contractor if water keeps returning, flashing is inaccessible, trim or framing is rotten, you suspect mold, or a test sends water into the wall. The right repair depends on the window type, wall and cladding details, confirmed entry path, condition behind trim, and product instructions. Before choosing repair or replacement, consider whether the flashing or water-resistive barrier is intact and accessible, how much damage exists, whether materials are compatible, and whether the proposed work preserves outward drainage.
