Along the way, set up a simple C.A.M.P., scrap gear you do not need, and try different perk cards. You do not need a finished build or every story branch on your first day.
Start here after leaving Vault 76
Follow the route to the Wayward
Speak with Pennington, meet Lacey, and head to the Wayward. Handle the confrontation there and talk to Duchess to continue. Bethesda’s Wayward Souls guide notes that you can ask Lacey for a free weapon if you need one.
Continue through the Overseer and Responders quests
Take the First Contact route to the Overseer’s C.A.M.P., then follow the Overseer log to Flatwoods and register as a Responders volunteer. This gives you a clear early sequence for learning the map and core systems instead of requiring a map-wide search. See Bethesda’s First Contact quest guide.
Build a simple routine, not a perfect character
Make your C.A.M.P. a practical base
Start with a modest setup that supports crafting and storage; you can expand it as you learn what you use. Plans for C.A.M.P. construction come from quests, events, vendors, and other players. When you need specific materials, tag those components in the Pip-Boy so they are easier to spot while scavenging. Bethesda covers these basics in its new-player guide.

Scrap before you stash junk
At a crafting station, use “Scrap All Junk” before placing materials in your Stash. Scrapping unwanted weapons and armor at workbenches can also teach you their mods, so carrying gear you will not use is often less useful than breaking it down. Keep or sell excess items when you have a reason to: Bethesda’s advice is not that every item should always be scrapped.
Experiment with SPECIAL and perk cards
Try cards as you level rather than treating your first selections as permanent. Bethesda’s June 10, 2021 newcomer guide says you gain a SPECIAL point each level through level 50; Punch Card Machines unlock at level 25 to reset SPECIAL and perk selections. Bethesda identifies level 50 as the point when the highest-level perk cards and max-level gear become available, so it is a natural time to specialize more deliberately. Use Public Teams only if they suit you
A Public Team can be a convenient way to get team benefits without making social play or following other players a requirement. Bethesda also recommends using other players’ C.A.M.P.s as map travel points. Treat both as optional conveniences; the cited beginner advice does not establish exact current numerical bonuses. What you can safely postpone
Level-20 story branches
Wastelanders’ full main story opens at level 20 in Sutton. Steel Dawn also starts at level 20 at Fort Atlas, and Bethesda says prior Fallout 76 quest content is not required to start it. These are additional routes, not prerequisites for the opening Wayward and Responders sequence. See Bethesda’s Wastelanders quest information and Steel Dawn quest information.

Workshop ownership
Workshops offer places to build and gather resources, but they are public locations other players can contest. A contest can initiate PvP within the Workshop build area, so do not treat a Workshop as a private replacement for your C.A.M.P. Bethesda explains the distinction in its new-player guide.
A specialized build
You can settle into a particular play style later. Early on, use the cards available to you and learn which weapons, crafting options, and routines you enjoy. The level 25 reset option and level 50 progression milestone mean a day-one build does not need to dictate how you play long term.

Before you log off
- Scrap junk at a crafting station before storing the materials.
- Scrap or sell unwanted gear rather than carrying it indefinitely.
- Keep a useful quest selected so the next objective is easy to find.
- Review the perk cards available for your current level and try choices that fit how you are playing.
- Tag components you are actively collecting, and use your C.A.M.P. as a practical crafting and storage stop.
Explore at your own pace. The opening quest route provides direction, while teams, Workshops, and later story branches remain choices rather than obligations.
