Sometimes. An outfit affects stats when it is the actual equipment your character has equipped. A cosmetic outfit or appearance override may change only how that equipment looks, leaving its stats intact. The rules vary by game, so the word “outfit” alone is not enough to tell you which system applies.
How outfits and stats can be connected—or separate
Think of a character’s equipped item and its displayed appearance as two potentially different things. The equipped item is the object whose armor rating, attributes, or other effects may count in gameplay. A cosmetic system can display a different look over that item without replacing it.
That separation is explicit in some games: Blizzard says Diablo Immortal cosmetics change appearance without affecting gear or stats, while Bethesda says ESO outfit changes override individual slot appearances rather than modifying the items. In games without a separate cosmetic layer, the visible armor may be the actual equipped item and can affect stats.
What the rules look like in specific MMOs
| Game | Appearance system | What the official material establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Diablo Immortal | Cosmetics | Blizzard says cosmetics change character and weapon appearance without affecting gear or stats. Cosmetic acquisition is class-specific, while each cosmetic set is available to every class. Blizzard’s explanation. |
| The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) | Disguises, costumes, and outfits | Bethesda says disguises are purely cosmetic and do not affect current gear stats. Costumes visually replace clothing, and outfit styles override the appearance of individual slots without modifying the underlying items. Disguise and costume support and outfit customization help. |
| World of Warcraft (WoW) | Transmogrification | Blizzard describes transmogrification as a way to customize the appearance of collected weapons and armor. Its September 2, 2025 Midnight announcement describes saving appearances to gear slots and says updating an outfit to a specific style costs gold. Those are WoW-specific details; consult current game documentation for live rules. |
| Guild Wars 2 | Outfits and Fashion Templates | Official support says outfits override other armor cosmetics on the selected Fashion Template. It also documents Transmutation Charge costs for certain cosmetic changes, with exceptions for some legendary gear slots. See Guild Wars 2 outfit support. |
These examples show why neither the terminology nor the cost can be generalized across MMOs. They are examples, not a complete survey of every game.

How to tell whether an outfit changes your stats
- Inspect the item tooltip. Look for an armor rating, attributes, or other gameplay effects. A stat-bearing equipment item can contribute those effects when equipped.
- Check where the item is equipped. Look for separate Equipment and Cosmetics, Appearance, or Outfit tabs or slots. Separate slots often indicate that the game distinguishes the functional item from its displayed look, but confirm the specific rules.
- Read the change prompt. Before applying a style, note whether the game says it modifies the item, overrides its appearance, consumes a token, or charges in-game currency.
- Confirm the current rules for that title. Use its official help page or patch notes, since features, fees, and restrictions can change with updates.
What to check when comparing cosmetic systems
If you are deciding how a particular game handles outfits—or comparing two games—check these separately:
- Whether the cosmetic is a separate item or an appearance override.
- Whether the underlying equipped gear keeps its stats.
- Which equipment slots can use a changed appearance.
- Whether the appearance has to be unlocked or owned.
- Whether applying or updating it costs currency or an item.
For example, Guild Wars 2’s documented Transmutation Charge rules and WoW’s gold cost for updating an outfit style concern the price of cosmetic changes; they do not establish a universal rule for other MMOs.
