A “physical uranium” investment usually means buying units in a listed trust that holds uranium—not buying uranium for delivery. A miners ETF, by contrast, owns mining-related securities, so it combines uranium-market exposure with the business risks of the companies it holds. The right comparison is therefore not simply uranium versus uranium: it is security structure, price behavior, costs, access, and investor-specific tax treatment.
What “physical uranium” and uranium stocks mean
Retail investors generally encounter uranium exposure through listed securities. The main distinction is what those securities own:
- A physical uranium trust holds uranium on behalf of investors. The Sprott Physical Uranium Trust (SPUT) is a closed-end trust established under Ontario law. Its January 22, 2026 base shelf prospectus says it invests substantially all its assets in uranium oxide concentrates and uranium hexafluoride.
- Uranium mining stocks are shares in companies involved in activities such as exploring for, developing, or producing uranium. Their value can be affected by uranium prices, but also by each company’s operations, finances, and business prospects.
- A uranium miners ETF holds mining-related securities rather than uranium itself. The Sprott Uranium Miners ETF (URNM) seeks to correspond generally, before fees and expenses, to the total return performance of the North Shore Global Uranium Mining Index. Its prospectus describes passive index replication, with sampling possible, and warns that the fund is non-diversified.
Those differences matter: a trust’s uranium exposure does not make its units equivalent to the commodity, and a miners fund’s share-price performance need not mirror uranium prices.
How the exposures and costs compare
| Vehicle | What it owns and what mainly drives exposure | Published recurring fee | Additional costs to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sprott Physical Uranium Trust (SPUT) | Uranium held by the trust; unit value can also be affected by market pricing relative to NAV. | 0.35% per year of NAV, plus applicable taxes and operating expenses, according to the January 22, 2026 base shelf prospectus. | Brokerage charges may apply. The cited prospectus does not establish a single total cost for every investor. |
| Sprott Uranium Miners ETF (URNM) | Mining-related securities; exposure includes company execution and sector risks as well as uranium-market movements. | 0.75% total annual operating expenses, according to the SEC-filed summary prospectus. | Brokerage commissions and intermediary charges may be additional; actual investor costs depend on the account and transaction. |
The figures describe different products and expense measures, not an all-in cost guarantee or a like-for-like price. They also exclude any investor-specific taxes. Compare the current prospectuses and your broker’s charges before trading. Sprott’s older FAQ describes a 1.0% commission payable to the manager on uranium purchases or sales, but that older reference does not establish whether it remains operative under current governing documents, so it should not be treated here as a confirmed current charge.

Can you buy physical uranium or take delivery?
For an ordinary retail investor, access to “physical uranium” typically means buying listed trust units through a financial intermediary, not purchasing uranium and arranging personal delivery. Uranium is stored at licensed uranium conversion, enrichment, or fuel-fabrication facilities. SPUT’s units are non-redeemable, so an investor cannot ordinarily exchange units for the underlying uranium.
SPUT lists two unit classes on the Toronto Stock Exchange: U.UN is denominated in Canadian dollars, and U.U is denominated in U.S. dollars. Whether either class is available to you depends on your country, broker, account type, and applicable rules; the listing does not guarantee universal access. A unit’s trading currency also does not remove currency exposure from the underlying investment or from your own base currency.

Mining stocks and miners ETFs are also accessed as securities through eligible brokers. Their availability likewise depends on local rules and the intermediary. Buying a share or ETF unit does not give the investor direct ownership or delivery rights to uranium held by a company or fund.
Why a physical uranium trust may not track uranium prices exactly
A listed trust unit has a market price, while the trust also reports net asset value (NAV), representing the value of its assets less liabilities. The unit’s market price can trade above or below the value attributable to its share of NAV. That premium or discount can change independently of uranium valuations, so a view that uranium prices will rise does not by itself establish that a trust unit is attractively priced.

Before comparing a trust with another uranium exposure, check the same-date unit price, latest reported NAV, and the resulting premium or discount, as well as the relevant uranium-price reference. These measures are not interchangeable. Trading spreads and brokerage costs can also affect an investor’s purchase price and eventual return.
As a dated example of the trust’s scale—not a market-wide uranium statistic—Sprott reported that SPUT held 81,447,348 pounds of uranium as of June 30, 2026. Sprott valued those holdings at $6.93 billion, or 98.3% of the trust’s $7.04 billion total value, on that date. These are trust-reported figures and do not establish today’s holdings or unit valuation.

Risks to weigh before choosing an exposure
Physical uranium trust risks
- Price and valuation: The trust’s uranium valuation may change, and its units may trade at a premium or discount to NAV.
- Fees and trading: Management fees, operating expenses, applicable taxes, brokerage charges, and market spreads can reduce returns.
- Custody and regulation: The uranium is held through specialist facilities and remains subject to custody, storage, and regulatory arrangements. Facility operators and arrangements can change, so consult current filings for details.
- Liquidity and governance: Trading liquidity, trust governance, and the terms governing the units can affect an investment independently of uranium prices.
- Currency: Unit class denomination and the currency in which an investor measures returns can affect the result.
Mining stock and miners ETF risks
- Company execution: Exploration, mine planning and commissioning, resource and grade estimates, operating costs, and production constraints can affect company results.
- Operational and environmental events: Weather, industrial incidents, labor or fuel and power costs, supply constraints, and environmental liabilities can disrupt operations or raise costs.
- Political and regulatory conditions: Mining companies can be affected by local political conditions, permitting, regulation, and changes in government policy.
- Equity and concentration risk: Share prices can be volatile, and an ETF’s index exposure may be concentrated. URNM’s prospectus specifically describes the fund as non-diversified and warns investors that losses may be significant.
URNM’s SEC-filed prospectus also states that the investment is not government insured or guaranteed. Neither a physical trust nor a miners fund removes the possibility of losing money.

Tax consequences can depend on your country, the account holding the security, your personal circumstances, and current law. Do not assume a tax treatment described for another jurisdiction or in an older product FAQ applies to you; consult current tax materials or a qualified tax professional.

A practical way to compare them
- Identify the actual security. Check whether it is a physical uranium trust, an individual mining company, or an ETF holding mining-related securities.
- Read current fund documents. Confirm the mandate, legal structure, redeemability, fee schedule, risks, and any changes to holdings or terms in current prospectuses and filings.
- For a trust, compare market price with NAV. Use figures from the same date and note the premium or discount; do not assume units track spot uranium one-for-one.
- Estimate your trading costs. Include the broker’s commissions and charges, the bid-ask spread, and any currency conversion applicable to your account.
- Check local access and tax rules. Verify that your broker can trade the security for your account and that you understand the treatment in your jurisdiction.
The Trust prospectus describes SPUT’s objective as providing “a secure, convenient and exchange-traded investment alternative for investors interested in holding physical Uranium.” That is the issuer’s stated objective, not an independent endorsement or a guarantee of price performance, custody outcomes, or suitability.
