It can be, but self-hosting alone guarantees neither privacy nor security. The key questions are whether the proxy merely tunnels HTTPS or decrypts it, what metadata it records, and whether it compresses confidential and attacker-controlled content together. A tunnel generally cannot read HTTPS request content; a proxy that intercepts TLS can.

What “private and secure” depends on

A self-hosted proxy changes who operates the intermediary: you control its deployment and data handling rather than relying solely on another operator. That control does not remove the intermediary from your network path or make it anonymous. Configuration, logs, access controls, software updates, and the traffic path still determine what can be seen or exposed.

“Compressing proxy” can mean different things: an intermediary transforming cleartext HTTP, a reverse proxy compressing responses it generates, or a proxy carrying traffic that uses compression elsewhere. Those designs do not have the same visibility or risk. First establish exactly where TLS ends and where compression happens.

What the proxy can see in each design

Design What the proxy can see Privacy consequence
HTTPS CONNECT tunnel without TLS interception Destination host and port and connection metadata. In the tunnel model, the HTTPS content remains encrypted and opaque to the proxy. The proxy cannot ordinarily inspect the protected request content, but it can learn where connections go and may retain metadata.
TLS termination or interception Decrypted HTTP traffic while it is inspected, including URLs, headers, and bodies. The proxy is a trusted endpoint for that traffic. Its administrators, keys, logs, and storage become part of the confidentiality boundary.
Cleartext HTTP intermediary that compresses or transforms content The cleartext content it processes, along with request and response metadata available at that hop. That content is not end-to-end private from the intermediary. HTTP hop-by-hop compression is described as uncommon.

Cloudflare’s Privacy Proxy documentation illustrates a tunnel design: it says the proxy learns destination information but not request content, and that the destination sees the proxy’s egress address rather than the client’s address. That describes Cloudflare’s service, not every self-hosted proxy. Check the implementation and configuration you actually use.

What HTTPS tunneling does—and does not—hide

With CONNECT tunneling, the proxy relays an encrypted connection rather than terminating TLS. It generally cannot read the HTTPS content, but it is still positioned to observe connection metadata such as the destination and timing. Proxy logs can also capture client addresses or authentication-related information, depending on the software and configuration.

Tunneling is not anonymity: the destination sees the proxy’s egress address, and the proxy operator can see at least some information about the connection. Nor does tunneling prevent risks at the endpoints or elsewhere along the network path.

Why compression can expose secrets

Compression reduces repeated data. If confidential information and attacker-controlled input are compressed together, an attacker who can influence inputs and observe resulting encrypted message lengths may be able to test guesses about the secret. Encryption protects content, but it does not necessarily hide message size.

RFC 9113, section 10.6, gives this normative warning: “Implementations communicating on a secure channel MUST NOT compress content that includes both confidential and attacker-controlled data unless separate compression dictionaries are used for each source of data.” The section also warns against compression when the source of data cannot be reliably determined.

This is not a claim that all compression makes HTTPS unsafe. The risk depends on whether secrets and attacker-controlled material share a compression context, and whether an attacker can trigger inputs and observe size differences. RFC 3749 likewise notes that compressed data length can reveal information when compression is combined with encryption.

Dynamic authenticated responses need particular care

A dynamically generated response may combine a secret, such as a token, with text influenced by a user or attacker. If both enter the same compression context, response lengths can provide a side channel. Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core response-compression guidance warns that compressing dynamically generated pages over secure connections can create CRIME and BREACH risks. Its cited version documents EnableForHttps as disabled by default; that is a framework-specific setting, not a default that can be assumed for other proxies or applications.

How to evaluate and reduce the risks

  • Choose tunneling unless inspection is necessary. If the proxy only needs to relay HTTPS, prefer CONNECT tunneling over installing a trusted interception certificate authority on clients. If TLS interception is required, treat the proxy as able to read the decrypted traffic.
  • Protect interception keys and administration. Limit access to the TLS interception CA private key and proxy management interface. An interception design increases the consequences of key theft, administrator compromise, insecure storage, or logging mistakes.
  • Scope compression carefully. For dynamic authenticated content, avoid compressing confidential and attacker-controlled values in the same compression context. Follow the guidance for the specific proxy, web framework, and version in use rather than assuming another product’s defaults apply.
  • Minimize logs and retention. Keep only the destination, timestamp, client, and authentication metadata needed for operation. Restrict who can read retained logs; even a tunnel-only proxy may collect sensitive connection history.
  • Review forwarding headers. Check how the proxy handles Forwarded and X-Forwarded-For. RFC 7239 section 8.2 warns that the Forwarded header can reveal internal network structure or proxy chains. Use trusted proxy boundaries, avoid exposing internal details unnecessarily, and do not echo untrusted forwarding data in responses.
  • Patch the proxy and its cryptographic dependencies. TLS proxy security depends in part on the libraries it uses; the Dutch NCSC’s TLS interception factsheet identifies library updates as an operational concern.
  • Bound CONNECT resources. Apply appropriate rate and resource limits. RFC 9113 notes that limiting concurrent streams alone may not constrain all resources associated with CONNECT connections.

A practical configuration check

  1. Find the TLS mode. In the proxy’s current configuration and documentation, determine whether HTTPS uses CONNECT tunneling or whether the proxy installs or uses a trusted CA to intercept TLS. Do not infer the mode from the word “proxy.”
  2. Locate compression. Identify whether the proxy compresses cleartext traffic, decrypted HTTPS responses, or neither. Check whether dynamic authenticated responses can put secrets and attacker-influenced content into the same compression context.
  3. Inspect what is recorded and forwarded. Review access logs, retention settings, authentication handling, and forwarding-header behavior. Determine which client and destination details leave the proxy or are exposed to administrators.
  4. Review operational safeguards. Confirm who can administer the proxy, how interception keys are protected if used, whether the proxy and TLS libraries receive updates, and what limits apply to CONNECT connections.

The title does not identify a particular implementation, so its defaults, logging, TLS behavior, and compression scope cannot be determined in the abstract. Assess those settings on the proxy you run.
