Yes. You can play Nintendo Switch Sports offline with friends using Play Locally on one console. For friends on separate consoles in the same home network, Nintendo also supports wired LAN play. Playing with friends online is a separate mode and requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

How friends are playing Mode Network and membership
Sharing one console Play Locally No online connection is required for same-console local play; Nintendo’s FAQ does not list a Nintendo Switch Online membership as a requirement for this mode. Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ
Using separate consoles in the same location LAN Play Each console must connect by Ethernet to the same wired router. Nintendo’s LAN Play instructions

Play offline together on one console

Start the game and choose its local-play option, then connect the compatible Joy-Con controllers needed for your selected sport and player count. The supported controller setup varies by sport: Nintendo lists paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, and Joy-Con with the Leg Strap among the supported configurations. Pro Controllers are not compatible. Check the Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ for controller guidance.

The game does not support Handheld Mode. Nintendo recommends TV Mode for the best play experience, so plan to play with the console connected to a display. Nintendo’s FAQ does not provide a complete sport-by-sport local player-limit table; player capacity can vary by sport.

Use LAN Play for friends with separate consoles

Nintendo’s LAN mode is local multiplayer across consoles, not same-console play. It requires a wired local network: every console needs the game, a display, and an Ethernet connection to the same router. Nintendo’s guide allows up to four consoles, with up to two players per console and eight players total. The sports available depend on how many players have joined.

  1. Connect each console to the same wired router. Use Ethernet cables. If a dock does not have a built-in LAN port, connect a USB LAN adapter. If the router does not have enough LAN ports, Nintendo says you can add a network switch.
  2. Launch the game and open LAN Play. One player creates a room as the host; players on the other consoles join it.
  3. Join with the players on each console. Nintendo supports up to two players per console, within the four-console and eight-player overall limits.

These requirements and limits are from Nintendo’s LAN Play guide. Switch Lite owners need a compatible way to connect a USB LAN adapter; Nintendo names the licensed HORI Dual USB PlayStand as an example for that specific setup.

Playing online is different from playing offline

For remote online play, Nintendo states: “An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online.” That requirement applies to online play, not to friends sharing one console in Play Locally.
