If your Nintendo Switch Sports character isn’t performing the action you intend, update the console and Joy-Con, reset the detached controller, then calibrate its motion controls in System Settings. Check the game’s controller setup as well. If calibration fails—or the problem follows the Joy-Con into other motion-control games—Nintendo recommends getting the controller serviced.
1. Update the Switch and Joy-Con
Nintendo’s motion-control troubleshooting starts with updates. Install the latest Nintendo Switch system update, then update the Joy-Con controller. Nintendo lists both checks before recalibrating a controller. See Nintendo’s motion-control troubleshooting steps.

2. Reset the detached Joy-Con

- Press the controller’s SYNC button once.
- Press another button to turn the controller on again.
After it reconnects, test the motion controls again. If the input is still inaccurate, continue to calibration.

Calibration is a console setting, not an option inside Nintendo Switch Sports. On the original Nintendo Switch, use this path:

- Select OK when prompted.
Follow Nintendo’s motion-control calibration instructions if you need the official steps.
4. Check the game’s play setup
Nintendo Switch Sports uses different Joy-Con configurations depending on the sport. Confirm that the controllers are set up for the sport you’re playing. The game does not support Handheld Mode; Nintendo recommends TV Mode for the best play experience. Its FAQ addresses the symptom directly: “What can I do if my character isn’t performing the correct actions when I move the Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con controller?” The answer points players to Nintendo’s motion-control troubleshooting.

- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
If you’re using the Leg Strap, check that it is attached properly. Joy-Con 2 is not compatible with the Nintendo Switch Sports Leg Strap. See the Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ.
5. Find out whether the problem follows the Joy-Con
Try the controller in other software that supports motion controls. This helps distinguish a problem limited to the game or its setup from one affecting the controller more broadly.
Rank #3
- The ultimate game that brings together 30 different sports
- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries

- It works elsewhere and calibrates successfully: Check the Nintendo Switch Sports controller setup for the sport you’re playing.
- It fails in other supported software or calibration fails: Nintendo recommends service for the affected Joy-Con. The controller troubleshooting guidance is at Nintendo Support.
Nintendo’s cited recommendation for a controller that fails these checks is service, rather than replacing it as the first troubleshooting step.
