Many Nintendo Switch games and selected accessories work on Nintendo Switch 2, but compatibility is not universal. Compatible physical and digital games can be played, and original Joy-Con and the Switch Pro Controller can connect wirelessly. The original Switch dock and ordinary microSD cards for game storage do not carry over, and some games or accessories have important limitations.
Which Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2?
Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo warns that some titles may not be supported or may not be fully compatible. There is no single compatibility percentage that guarantees a particular game will work as expected.
Check Nintendo’s game compatibility information for the title you plan to play. Nintendo says the list can change as it tests games and publishers release updates. For a game published by another company, Nintendo advises contacting that publisher if you need more information. Its general guidance is on the Nintendo Switch game compatibility page.
Updates and Switch 2 Edition upgrades
Some games have updates or a paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade. These are not the same thing: updates can be free, while Switch 2 Edition upgrades cost money, and the additions vary by game. Not every Switch game has an update or an upgrade. Nintendo outlines the options in its Switch 2 transfer guide.

Can you use original Switch controllers?
Original Joy-Con and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can connect to Switch 2 wirelessly. That does not make them identical to the new system’s controllers in fit, charging, or features.
- Original Joy-Con: They do not attach to the Switch 2 console and cannot charge directly from it. Use them wirelessly, and arrange charging separately.
- Switch Pro Controller: It works wirelessly, but it cannot provide Joy-Con 2 features such as mouse controls when a game requires them.
- HOME button and sleep: The HOME buttons on original Switch controllers cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep.
Check the individual game’s controller requirements, especially if it uses a feature specific to Joy-Con 2. Nintendo lists controller and feature limitations in its compatibility table and transfer guide.

Do old Switch accessories work with Switch 2?
It depends on how an accessory connects and what it is designed to fit. Attachments made for original Joy-Con generally do not fit Joy-Con 2, though some can still be used with original Joy-Con for particular games.

These distinctions come from Nintendo’s accessory compatibility table. For an attachment or controller, compatibility may depend on wireless connection, physical fit, power or charging, and whether the game supports it.

Can you use an old Switch microSD card for games?
No. Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for game storage; a conventional microSD card from a Switch does not expand its game storage. Nintendo says an ordinary Switch microSD card can still be used to view screenshots and videos captured on Switch. See Nintendo’s compatibility table for the storage distinction.

Nintendo’s system transfer process can move digital games, certain save data, and settings. Digital games transferred this way are automatically redownloaded. The guide does not establish that every save or game-specific feature transfers identically, so check the game’s requirements and transfer details before relying on a particular save.
