When you get stuck, don’t search for the solution yet. Use a no-spoiler sequence: reread the clue or rules, record what you know, make a move that narrows the possibilities, and revisit any tentative answers when new information appears. The best next move depends on whether you’re solving a crossword, a Wordle-like game, an anagram, or a word search.
A repeatable no-spoiler method
- Reread the prompt and rules. Check the exact wording, answer length, required letters, and any special constraints. A small detail can change what counts as a valid answer.
- Separate facts from guesses. Write down confirmed letters, positions, clue details, and eliminated options. Mark uncertain entries as provisional rather than building the rest of the puzzle around them.
- Choose a move that adds information. In a crossword, fill an answer you know and use its crossing letters. In a feedback game, test useful letters or distinguish between likely candidates. In an anagram, preserve the letter inventory as you rearrange it.
- Reassess when new information arrives. If crossings or feedback conflict with an entry, revisit the least-supported answer first. Don’t force the puzzle to accommodate a guess just because you entered it earlier.
- Escalate hints gradually. If you still need help, look for a hint about the clue or fact before asking for the complete answer. Use check or reveal controls only if you’re comfortable with their effects in that particular game.
This approach is a practical way to keep solving independently; no reviewed source establishes a single success rate for it across all kinds of word puzzles.
Wordle-like games: make guesses informative
After each guess, record three things: letters confirmed in the correct position, letters present but misplaced, and letters or placements the feedback rules out. Avoid spending repeated guesses on letters you already know unless the new guess tests a useful position.
When several answers still fit
A guess can be useful even when it is unlikely to be the answer: it may distinguish among several remaining candidates. This depends on the game’s rules and the guesses you have left. In Hard mode, for example, the game constrains which guesses you can enter, so the advice to use a separating guess applies only when the mode permits it.

One editor’s opening approach
Tracy Bennett, Wordle editor since late 2022 according to an App Store feature, recommends two sequential guesses that cover common consonants and vowels, then maximizing unique letters in the first three moves. She describes a practical approach, not a universally best opening for every answer list, mode, or player. Read the App Store feature.
Word knowledge also helps generate candidates. A European Commission CORDIS feature quotes researcher Ana Ulicheva saying, “So one of the strategies for playing Wordle better is literally to just read more.” The same feature says E is the most common final letter in English five-letter words, ending over 20% of them; that statistic concerns English five-letter words, not a measurement of the current Wordle answer list. How to interpret published Wordle statistics
Published strategy results are tied to particular models, simulations, rules, and answer sets. They can illustrate what a strategy achieved under those conditions, but they do not predict a human player’s score or establish the best approach for every version of the game.

Wordle’s accepted guesses, answer lists, and modes can change, so these 2022 results should be read as study-specific rather than current guarantees.

Crosswords: use crossings to test the clue
Start with clues you can answer confidently, then let their letters narrow the harder entries. For each clue, check the answer length, tense, number, grammar, and wording. Consider wordplay where the clue suggests it, but don’t keep an attractive synonym if it clashes with several crossings.
Keep weak entries provisional
Think of uncertain answers as pencil entries. If multiple crossing answers disagree, return to the entry with the weakest support instead of changing otherwise-solid answers to preserve it. In a themed puzzle, wait for enough evidence before assuming a theme and using it to determine an answer.

Joel Fagliano, editor of The Mini, recommends moving between Across and Down clues rather than treating the puzzle as a list of unrelated questions: “Use crossing letters as hints. Too many people solve The Mini like a quiz, going question by question. Instead, as soon as you fill in a word, tap the Down answers that cross it. Especially if you’ve entered a rare letter like j or z that will narrow down a lot of possibilities.” Read the App Store feature.
Arkadium’s crossword guidance puts the value of those intersections plainly: “Crossing letters are your strongest source of confirmation.” When an answer remains elusive, Arkadium also suggests looking into the clue or fact itself rather than immediately searching for the complete answer. Anagrams and letter-cluster puzzles: preserve the inventory
Keep track of every letter while trying new arrangements; otherwise, it’s easy to accidentally add, lose, or reuse one. Look for familiar consonant blends, common beginnings and endings, and short words that share a cluster. If the instructions suggest related answers, look for a category or shared pattern rather than treating each jumble in isolation.

Education.com’s Anagram Puzzles #1 worksheet groups four anagrams at a time whose solutions belong to the same category. That format makes the category itself a useful constraint once you have solved one or two entries. See Education.com’s anagram worksheets.
For Spelling Bee-style games
Sam Ezersky, Spelling Bee editor, recommends using familiar letter combinations such as “ed” and “ing,” and consonant combinations such as “pl” or “ch.” Try several words that share a partial cluster, and take a break if you stop seeing possibilities; returning with fresh eyes can help. How to get a hint without spoiling the solution
Use the least revealing form of help available, and check what it does before selecting it. Controls differ by game: they are not universal features of every crossword or word puzzle.
- Look up the clue or underlying fact. This can help clarify an unfamiliar reference without searching the answer itself, as Arkadium advises for crossword clues.
- Ask for a nudge, not the answer. A hint about the clue’s wording, a possible word pattern, or a category can preserve the solving step.
- Use check and reveal controls deliberately. The New York Times Crossword Help Center documents hint, check, and reveal options. It says using Check or Reveal resets the Crossword streak, so consult the current help page before using those options if your streak matters. See the NYT Crossword Help Center.
