The best way to send money internationally when exchange rates are volatile is to compare live, like-for-like quotes and choose based on the recipient’s expected payout—not a provider’s headline fee. For a payment due later, consider a rate lock only if budget certainty matters more than the chance of benefiting from a better exchange rate.
Compare the amount paid with the amount received
For each option, check both the total leaving your account and the amount the recipient is expected to receive. The real cost can include the provider’s transfer fee, an exchange-rate spread, taxes, and deductions by intermediary or recipient banks. A transfer advertised as “no fee” can still cost more if its exchange rate is less favorable.
Get quotes for the same currency pair, amount, funding method, and recipient payout method at roughly the same time. Exchange rates move, and fees can vary by route and payment details; comparing quotes taken at different times or with different inputs can give a misleading result.
Where available, compare the provider’s offered rate with a current reference rate, such as the mid-market rate. The difference is useful context, but the expected recipient payout remains the practical comparison because it reflects the quote’s combined costs.

Check the details that change the quote
- Currency pair and destination: A provider may support one route but not another, and charges can differ by corridor.
- Amount and funding method: Fees and rates may vary depending on how much you send and whether you pay by bank transfer, card, or another method.
- Recipient payout method: Bank deposit and other payout options may have different availability, timing, or deductions.
- Delivery estimate: Use the estimate for your specific payment, not a provider-wide speed claim. Delivery can depend on the route and payment method.
- Promotions and third-party charges: Check whether a special price applies only to a first transfer or expires, and whether intermediary or recipient banks may deduct money.
Wise says its U.S. pricing uses the live mid-market rate and an upfront fee; its fees vary by currency pair and funding method. That is a provider’s description of its pricing, not evidence that it will be the cheapest for your transfer. Its reported 0.53% average fee as of Q3 2025 applies to a fixed basket of representative currencies and is Wise’s own company-specific figure, not a market-wide average or a full measure of every transfer’s cost. See Wise’s U.S. pricing page and its fee review.
Get comparable live quotes
- Write down the sender and recipient countries, currencies, amount, due date, funding method, and how the recipient needs to receive the money.
- Request a quote from the sender’s bank and at least one specialist provider using those same details, close together in time.
- Compare the total sender cost and expected recipient payout. Review the rate, fee, any stated taxes, delivery estimate, and possible third-party deductions.
- Check when each quote expires and whether any promotional rate or fee applies only to an initial transfer.
- Before paying, review or save the confirmation details. Recheck the quote if it has expired or if the amount, funding method, or recipient details have changed.
In the United States, covered consumer remittance transfers generally come with disclosures that include the exchange rate, applicable fees and taxes, and expected recipient amount. Exceptions and estimate rules apply, and these protections do not establish a universal disclosure requirement for every international payment worldwide. The CFPB’s remittance resources explain the U.S. framework.

For a future payment, weigh a rate lock against flexibility
If you need to pay later and the amount in the recipient’s currency must fit a budget, ask whether the provider offers a rate lock, forward exchange contract, or limit order. A locked rate can make the amount easier to plan, but it also means you may miss out if the market moves in your favor before the payment is due.
OFX describes forward contracts of up to twelve months and limit orders, and says a customer can confirm a transfer to lock its quote. Availability, eligibility, and contract terms depend on the customer and currency route. Before agreeing, confirm the obligations, what happens if the payment is delayed or not completed, and when the rate becomes binding. See OFX’s explanation of forward contracts and its transfer information.

Choose according to the payment’s priorities
| Priority | What to compare or ask | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest practical cost | Same-time quotes for the same route and amount; compare total paid with recipient payout. | A low listed fee does not guarantee a low total cost if the rate is less favorable. |
| Predictable future budget | Ask about a rate lock or forward contract, its term, eligibility, and cancellation or delay obligations. | Certainty can come at the expense of benefiting from a later favorable market move. |
| Fast delivery | Compare the estimated delivery time for the exact corridor, funding method, and payout method. | A provider’s general speed claim may not apply to a specific transfer. |
| Specific recipient needs | Confirm support for the recipient’s country, currency, amount, and required payout method. | Not every provider supports every route or payment setup. |
