To set up a currency rate alert, choose the pair you plan to exchange (such as USD/EUR or USD/JPY), set a target rate, and enable the available email or app notifications. When an alert arrives, check the exchange provider’s live quote and fees before you act: an alert monitors a rate, but it does not necessarily make an exchange, and a mid-market reference rate is not a guaranteed customer rate.
What a currency rate alert does—and doesn’t do
A rate alert watches a currency pair and notifies you when its rate reaches a condition you set. For example, you might track USD/EUR and choose a target that would make exchanging dollars for euros more attractive to you. Confirm how the service expresses the pair and target before saving the alert.
An alert is not automatically an exchange order. Wise offers a separate app auto-convert feature, which can initiate a conversion based on instructions you configure; that is different from receiving a notification and deciding what to do yourself. Wise describes its rate alerts and auto-convert.
Set up an alert with Xe
Xe’s documented help workflow is for a business account, and its setup article is dated 28 June 2023. Labels and account interfaces can change, so use the equivalent alert control if your current Xe app or account looks different. Xe Help Centre: How do I set up a rate alert?

- Sign in to your Xe account and open Rate alerts.
- Select the plus icon to create an alert.
- Choose the currency pair you want to monitor.
- Enter a target rate, or move the alert line on the graph to choose one.
- Optionally add a nickname, then create the alert.
Xe’s FAQ says alerts are available on its app and website. In the app, register or sign in, open the alerts screen using the bell icon, and add a pair and target. Set up an alert with Wise
Wise’s exchange-rate page offers free rate alerts and describes phone notifications. Check the current Wise interface for the pair, target, and notification options available to your account. The service’s Rate Tracker shows a mid-market reference rate; Wise says that receiving this rate when making a transfer is not guaranteed. Wise exchange-rate alerts.

If you want a conversion to happen automatically rather than simply receive a notification, review Wise’s separate auto-convert feature and its instructions carefully. Do not assume that creating an alert also configures an automatic exchange.
Compare these details before relying on an alert
- Pair and direction: Check that the service supports the route you need, such as USD/EUR, and that you understand which currency is being valued against the other. Availability can vary; the providers’ pages do not establish support for every pair or every geography and account type.
- Target entry: Confirm whether you type a target rate or select it on a chart, and make sure the target represents the rate you intended.
- Notification channel: Check whether the alert will arrive by email, app push notification, or both, and allow notifications in your device settings if needed.
- Actual transaction cost: Before exchanging, review the provider’s current quote and fees. Rates move, and the reference rate shown when an alert triggers may differ from the rate available when you transact.
Why the alert rate may differ from your exchange quote
A mid-market rate is a reference point, not a promise that a consumer transfer will use that exact rate. Wise says, “Rate Tracker always shows the latest real, mid-market exchange rate,” and also warns, “Getting this rate when making a transfer with Wise isn’t guaranteed.” Those statements appear on Wise’s exchange-rate alert page.

Xe makes the same distinction for its reference rate: “We use the mid-market rate for our Converter. This is for informational purposes only. You won’t receive this rate when sending money.” See Xe’s rate-alert page. Treat the notification as a prompt to check the live transaction terms, not as confirmation of a particular payout amount.
