To reduce haloing or blooming on a Mini LED TV, compare its local-dimming setting on the same dark scene with subtitles or small bright objects. Try a lower setting or turn local dimming off if your TV allows it; this can make halos less noticeable but may weaken blacks and contrast. The best setting depends on the TV’s model and processing, so judge the result on your own screen.
Why Mini LED TVs show halos
A Mini LED TV is still an LCD television illuminated by a zoned LED backlight. Each zone serves many pixels, so when a small bright object appears against a dark background, the TV may have to light an area larger than the object itself. Some of that light can spill into nearby dark parts of the picture, appearing as a glow or halo.
Subtitles, stars, small lamps and bright interface elements against black are useful scenes for revealing the effect. It is a consequence of zone-based backlighting, not by itself proof that the TV is defective.
How to reduce blooming with picture settings

Find the local-dimming control
Look in your TV’s picture settings for Local Dimming, Local Contrast or a similar label. Change this control first, leaving other settings alone, and compare the same difficult scene each time. Menu labels and behavior differ by brand and model.

Compare lower, higher and off settings
If the halo is distracting, try reducing local dimming or turning it off if that option is available. In some content this makes the glow less apparent, but it also reduces local contrast and can make dark scenes look less deep. A stronger setting may retain deeper blacks, yet dim very small bright details or introduce other processing artifacts.
TCL describes its options as a tradeoff: its support FAQ says that Normal balances brightness and control, with some halo effects possible in extreme scenes, while High aims to make halos less noticeable but can dim very small light-emitting objects. Those descriptions apply to TCL’s options, not every TV’s settings.

Adjust brightness or picture mode only afterward
Once you have chosen a local-dimming setting, compare picture modes or overall brightness if the image still does not look right. Keep the test scene constant. Avoid lowering brightness so far that highlights lose their impact or shadow detail becomes difficult to see.

Check whether subtitles or a source trigger it
If the glow is most noticeable around subtitles, compare another scene or source. If the app offers subtitle appearance controls, trying a less bright or less prominent style is a reasonable experiment, but it is not a universal fix. Different content and apps may produce different results.

Consider viewing conditions as a perception check
Room light and viewing angle can affect how visible halos seem. Try viewing from your usual seat and, if practical, compare under different room-light conditions. These are low-risk checks, not a correction to the TV’s backlight behavior.

Investigate a new or unusual change
If the effect has appeared suddenly or seems abnormal, consult support information for your exact model and firmware. Settings and image processing vary, and there is no established general firmware update that fixes blooming across Mini LED TVs. Use manufacturer guidance rather than unofficial software.

Choosing between less blooming and deeper blacks
There is no single setting that maximizes halo control, shadow depth and highlight brightness at once. Use a scene that matters to you, then decide which compromise looks better in ordinary viewing:
- Prioritize less visible glow: test a lower local-dimming level or Off, accepting that blacks may look lighter and local contrast may fall.
- Prioritize dark-scene depth: test a stronger level, while watching whether tiny highlights become dim or other artifacts appear.
- Prefer the balanced option: compare the middle setting with both extremes rather than relying on the label alone.
Does more dimming zones mean less blooming?
More, smaller zones can help a TV control light more precisely, but zone count alone does not predict picture quality. The processing algorithm and panel behavior also matter. RTINGS’ examples illustrate why results should be judged model by model: it reports visible halos in an example using a tested Hisense QD7QF with 160 zones, and much less haloing in a tested Sony BRAVIA 9 size with 1,512 zones. These are specific test observations, not a universal zone threshold or a promise about every size or generation.
RTINGS also notes that Mini LED has no universally enforced definition. When comparing TVs, look at tested performance on the exact model and screen size, especially scenes with subtitles and small highlights on dark backgrounds. Consider halo control alongside black-level and shadow-detail behavior, highlight brightness, zone transitions and processing artifacts—not just the Mini LED label or a headline zone count.
When is blooming normal?
A halo around a small bright object on a dark background can occur because the backlight zones cover more area than individual pixels. How visible it is varies with the scene and the TV’s dimming control and processing. There is no universal threshold for acceptable blooming, and the examples above do not establish a prevalence rate or determine whether a particular TV is faulty. If the appearance is new or substantially different from before, check the manufacturer’s guidance for your specific model.
