Muted colors are often a normal limitation of reflective color E Ink, not proof that your e-reader is faulty. On E Ink Kaleido 3, the color layer has a published resolution of 150 pixels per inch (ppi), compared with 300 ppi for black and white, and supports up to 4,096 colors. You can experiment with your device’s lighting controls, but settings cannot turn its panel into a phone-style color screen.
Why color E Ink can look washed out
E Ink Kaleido 3 builds color display from a color filter array over a black-and-white E Ink layer. That reflective design is different from the kind of color display used by most phones and tablets, so color-rich images may look less saturated or detailed than they do on those devices.
E Ink’s published Kaleido 3 specifications list up to 4,096 colors, 150 ppi in color, and 300 ppi in black and white. The 300 ppi figure applies to monochrome, not color. E Ink’s 2022 launch announcement also said Kaleido 3 offered 30% higher color saturation than the previous Kaleido Plus generation; that is the manufacturer’s comparison, not an independent measurement. Its official 7-inch module specification lists the same color and monochrome resolutions.
These figures explain why colorful pages can look softer or less vivid than expected, particularly if you are comparing them with a phone or a high-quality printed image. They do not describe every color e-reader: devices can use different display technologies and their appearance can vary by model.

What to try on your e-reader
Adjust brightness
If your device has a frontlight, compare a brighter setting with the one you normally use. Lighting can change how bright or dark the screen appears, but the useful setting depends on the device and your reading environment. A TechRadar review of the BOOX Note Air5 C reported a dramatic change in perceived darkness when the brightness was lowered; that observation is specific to that model, not a universal rule.
Compare warm and cool light
Try the available color-temperature settings while viewing the same image. In its Note Air5 C review, TechRadar said warmer, yellow light affected the colors shown and suggested cooler light may be preferable when color fidelity matters on that model. Treat this as a model-specific observation, not a general calibration instruction; choose the setting that looks most natural to you.

Check the screen in your usual reading conditions
Compare settings in the lighting where you actually read. Note which combination makes images legible and comfortable without assuming that any one setting expands the panel’s color range.
Distinguish a limitation from a possible fault
If the colors have always looked muted, compare your expectations with the specifications for the display technology in your device. Muted color alone does not establish that the screen is defective. The cited specifications do not provide a diagnostic test for an individual device; if you suspect a fault, contact the manufacturer or seller for model-specific support.

What to consider if you are choosing a color e-reader
Match the display to what you read. For mostly text, the monochrome reading experience may matter more than vivid color. For comics, illustrated reference books, charts, or color annotations, pay closer attention to color resolution, display technology, and examples of the specific device displaying the kind of content you use. Kaleido 3’s published color resolution is 150 ppi, so do not mistake its 300 ppi black-and-white figure for color resolution.
Technology comparisons should be made carefully. TechRadar compared the BOOX Note Air5 C, which uses Kaleido 3, with a device using Gallery 3 and described the Gallery 3 device as having better saturation in that comparison. This is one reviewer’s observation in a particular device context, not a controlled, universal ranking of all color e-readers or display technologies.

Before buying, check whether the specific model offers adjustable frontlight brightness and color temperature, and look for examples of the content you care about. A different panel may suit your needs better, but no replacement can be assumed to make reflective color E Ink look like a phone display.
