Choose a USB flash drive for carrying files between devices with compatible USB ports; choose an SD or microSD card when the device you want to store data on—such as a camera—has a card slot. Neither is inherently better for every transfer, and neither should be the only copy of important files.
Which should you choose?
| Choose a USB flash drive when… | Choose an SD or microSD card when… |
|---|---|
| You need a removable file carrier for compatible computers, tablets or phones. Match the drive’s connector, such as USB-A or USB-C, to the host. | Your camera, drone, phone or other device is designed to use a card of that format and generation. |
| You want to plug the storage directly into a compatible USB port. | You need storage that fits a device’s card slot. To transfer files to a computer without a suitable slot, use a compatible USB card reader or adapter. |
| You need a convenient extra copy of files, with the understanding that removable flash storage is not a dependable sole backup. | You need a convenient extra copy or device storage, while keeping another copy of important files elsewhere. |
The SD Association’s 2017 comparison describes SD cards as “portable convenience” and USB flash drives as “flexible usage”; that is a useful distinction, not a claim that one category is always faster or more reliable. SD Association comparison.
Check compatibility before buying or transferring
For a USB flash drive, check the port
Confirm that the drive’s connector fits the device and that the device supports the drive’s connection. USB-A and USB-C are common connector options, but the physical fit alone does not establish compatibility with every host. See SanDisk’s USB flash drive guide and your device documentation.
For an SD card, check format generation and capacity
SD, SDHC and SDXC are not interchangeable in every host. SanDisk lists SDHC cards as 4–32 GB and SDXC cards as 64 GB–2 TB; an SDXC card is not backwards compatible with a host that supports only SD or SDHC. Check the device manual for supported card type and capacity before buying. These ranges and compatibility notes come from SanDisk’s SD card compatibility guidance, updated in 2026.

A computer without an SD slot can still access a card through a compatible USB reader/writer or computer card adapter. The SD Association advises checking the host manual for the supported card size and speed class. SD Association FAQ.
Check filesystem support for large files
SanDisk notes that FAT32 has a 4 GB individual file-size limit and describes exFAT as suitable for large files across Windows and Mac. Before formatting a drive or card, confirm that every target device supports the chosen filesystem; a format that works on a computer may not be accepted by a camera or other host. How to compare speed without being misled
There is no established category-wide speed winner between USB flash drives and SD cards. Actual performance depends on the exact storage product and the host, and the sources here do not provide a controlled comparison. A headline maximum or speed-class label is not a promise of everyday file-copy speed.
What SD speed classes tell you
SD speed-class symbols specify minimum sequential writing performance under defined conditions. They are especially useful for recording devices: match the card’s class to the host’s stated requirement, or select a class at least as high. The SD Association cautions that different class symbols can have different meanings even when their numbers appear similar. SD Association speed-class overview.

SanDisk lists UHS-I U1 at a minimum 10 MB/s sequential write rate and U3 at a minimum 30 MB/s. These are minimum write specifications, not guaranteed transfer rates for copying files to a computer. Follow the camera or host manual’s requirement. SanDisk compatibility guidance.
Interface ceilings are not typical transfer results
SanDisk lists UHS-I maximum interface rates of up to 50 MB/s or 104 MB/s, and UHS-II rates of up to 156 MB/s or 312 MB/s. These are interface ceilings, not benchmark results for a particular card. Reaching an interface’s maximum depends on the card and a host that supports that interface; actual rates depend on the card label or datasheet. SanDisk compatibility guidance.

A flash drive or memory card can be useful for carrying another copy of files, but it should not be the only place irreplaceable data lives. Kingston warns that flash devices can lose or corrupt data and advises keeping important information on multiple media rather than storing it solely on flash storage. Transfers can fail if a device is disconnected while writes are still in progress. Kingston explains that interrupted writes can corrupt a file allocation table, potentially making some or all files inaccessible. On a computer, use the safe-removal option before unplugging a USB drive because writes may be cached; for a memory card, wait for the device’s write activity to finish. SanDisk also advises safe removal and checking the card’s temperature specifications. Kingston data-loss guidance; SanDisk compatibility guidance.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Identify the destination device: use the storage format its manual supports.
- For USB, match the connector and host: do not assume that a connector that fits guarantees full compatibility.
- For SD, verify generation, capacity and speed class: older hosts may not accept SDXC, and recording devices may require a specified class.
- Plan the transfer path: if the computer lacks a compatible card slot, use a suitable USB reader or adapter.
- Check filesystem support: verify it on all target devices before formatting, especially when transferring files larger than 4 GB.
- Keep another copy of important files: treat removable flash storage as one copy, not the sole backup.
