There is no independently verified winner for which game benefits most from PSSR. The strongest game-specific evidence comes from developers: Remedy highlights Control and especially Alan Wake 2 for improved image stability; Square Enix reports finer hair detail and less flicker in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth; and id Software explains how reconstruction helps fine detail hold together during fast action in Doom: The Dark Ages. Those are developer assessments, not controlled comparisons across games. Sony cautions that results vary by title.

Also, “PS5 AI upscaling” now refers to two different features: PSSR for compatible PS5 Pro games and QSSR, a separate, lighter upscaling tier announced for the original PS5 in October 2026.

What is the difference between PS5 AI upscaling and PSSR?

PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is Sony’s AI-based image-upscaling library for compatible PS5 Pro games. Sony says it analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. It can reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution input, but the visual result depends on the game’s implementation and scene.

QSSR (Quality Super Resolution) is a separate AI-upscaling tier Sony announced for the original PS5 on October 1, 2026. Sony describes QSSR as using a streamlined neural network and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize PS5 performance. Its first announced games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony says PSSR remains the higher-end experience on PS5 Pro. QSSR is not simply PSSR enabled on the standard PS5, and it does not apply to every PS5 game. Sony’s QSSR announcement provides the launch details.

  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

PSSR support is also not synonymous with PS5 Pro enhancement in general. Sony’s PS5 Pro page says over 100 PS5 titles are enhanced by the console, but that figure is not a count of PSSR-supported games. As of October 4, 2026, the page separately lists titles supported by the “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” system setting. Sony says that setting applies to PS5 Pro games that support PSSR, and warns that results vary by title. Check Sony’s current PS5 Pro page for the changing support list and setting details.

Which games have the clearest reported PSSR improvements?

The examples below have specific developer descriptions of the image qualities affected. They are useful starting points for comparison, not a ranking: the available statements do not establish which game has the largest measured gain.

Game What the developer or Sony reports How to interpret it
Control and Alan Wake 2 Remedy Graphics Technical Director Tatu Aalto says upgraded PSSR improves upscaling quality and stability. He says, “Control and, especially, Alan Wake 2 benefit from these improvements on the Pro, resulting in better, more stable image quality.” The clearest direct comparison between two named games in the available developer comments, but still a qualitative assessment rather than a measured cross-game result.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Director Naoki Hamaguchi reports more natural restoration of fine detail such as character hair, with more stable processing and less flickering and afterimage than the original PSSR. Look closely at hair and other fine detail, especially during movement. The comment compares updated PSSR with the original version in this game.
SILENT HILL f Konami’s production team calls out clearer fine detail, including grass and shadows, and a smoother experience following the latest PSSR update. A useful example for inspecting foliage and shadow detail; the statement does not quantify the gain.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard BioWare Studio Technical Director Maciej Kurowski says updated PSSR provides a meaningful image-quality improvement while maintaining stable frame rates in Fidelity and Performance modes. Relevant if you are comparing image quality and frame-rate stability across those modes; the claim is developer-reported.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Ninja Theory Studio Head Dom Matthews says the team was impressed by particle-effect quality with updated PSSR. Particle effects are the specific strength mentioned, not a general claim that every scene improves equally.
Doom: The Dark Ages id Software Director of Engine Technology Billy Khan says reconstruction helps small details such as snow, chains, sparks, and thin geometry hold together more consistently during fast movement and dense combat. Sony says the game’s PSSR support is exclusive to PS5 Pro. A particularly relevant case for judging motion and effects-heavy scenes; the explanation is not an independent measurement.
007 First Light IO Interactive says upgraded PSSR is enabled by default in the PS5 Pro version and reconstructs a sharper, more stable image from a lower internal resolution. A recent example of a default implementation, not evidence that it benefits more than the other games.

Sony’s current “Supported titles with Enhanced PSSR” list names Resident Evil Requiem, SILENT HILL f, SILENT HILL 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Alan Wake 2, Control, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Crimson Desert, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Cyberpunk 2077. It is a support list, not a ranking by visual improvement; check the page for current availability and title-specific support.

How to judge whether PSSR makes a difference in a game

Use the same display and viewing conditions when comparing versions or settings. A still screenshot can hide artifacts that appear during movement, so compare both static detail and actual play.

  1. Inspect fine detail. Look at hair, foliage, thin geometry, textures, and small objects in the distance. These are the kinds of details developers specifically cite.
  2. Watch during motion. Pan the camera and move through a scene to check for flicker, shimmer, ghosting, or detail that breaks up. Fast movement can expose differences that a paused image does not.
  3. Check the graphics mode and performance. Note whether the title ties PSSR to Fidelity, Performance, or another mode, and compare frame-rate consistency as well as image quality. Do not assume the same trade-off applies to every game.
  4. Confirm the implementation and setting. Check whether the game has received the relevant PSSR patch, whether it uses the original or upgraded implementation, and whether the optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting is available and enabled for that title.
  5. Compare representative scenes. Effects-heavy sequences and dense geometry may show strengths or artifacts that are absent in a simple scene. Use scenes that reflect how you actually play.

This is a practical comparison method based on the image qualities discussed by Sony and developers, not a Sony scoring system. Sony’s February 27, 2026 announcement said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles “to date.” That is a dated count of titles using PSSR by that announcement, not a count of games with the upgraded PSSR version. Sony’s February 2026 announcement describes the technology and developer examples. Sony later discussed additional updates in its March 2026 rollout announcement; for current support, use the product page rather than dated rollout plans.

Does PSSR make every PS5 Pro game look better?

No. PSSR is used by compatible titles, and games may implement it differently or connect it to particular graphics modes. A game can have PS5 Pro enhancements without using PSSR, while PSSR support does not guarantee the same visible improvement in every scene. The statements from Sony and developers are qualitative; they do not provide standardized, independent measurements that establish a universal winner. If you want to decide whether a specific title benefits on your display, compare its supported modes and current patch under consistent conditions.
