If your USB flash drive is not showing up, first check whether it is missing only from File Explorer or Finder, or whether Windows Disk Management or Mac Disk Utility cannot see it either. A drive listed in the system utility may need a drive letter or may have an unmounted volume; one absent there calls for connection checks before you try repairs. If the files matter, do not format or create a partition.
Start with the USB connection
Unplug the flash drive, reconnect it, and try a different USB port. Connect it directly to the computer rather than through a hub or dock. If you use a powered hub, check that its power adapter is connected. These steps help rule out a problem with the port or connection path; they do not prove that the drive itself is faulty.
If you see a power-related warning, note its exact wording. Apple recommends trying another port, connecting the device directly, and checking the power adapter for a self-powered hub when a connected device is not recognized because of a power issue. Apple’s USB power guidance
Protect your files before repairing the drive
If the flash drive contains files you need, do not format it, erase it, or create a partition while diagnosing the problem. Microsoft Support states, “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” Microsoft also warns, “Don’t create a partition after losing data, because this reduces the chance of a successful recovery.” See Microsoft’s Disk Management guidance and Windows File Recovery guidance.

If the files are irreplaceable, stop making changes to the drive and consider getting help from a data-recovery professional. Recovery is not guaranteed. Windows File Recovery supports flash and USB drives as sources in some cases, but its file-system and recovery-mode requirements apply; recovery software cannot help if the computer does not detect the device at all.
Check whether Windows detects the drive
These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Open Start and search for Create and format hard disk partitions to open Disk Management. Find the USB drive in the disk and volume list, taking care not to change another disk by mistake.

If the volume is listed but missing from File Explorer
A listed volume without a drive letter may not appear in File Explorer. Disk Management can change a volume’s drive letter. Select only the USB drive’s correct volume and use the available drive-letter option. Do not initialize the disk, create a partition, or format it as a general first fix, especially if it contains files you want to keep.
If the drive is not listed in Disk Management
Try another port and a direct connection, then check whether the computer reports an error. If it is a USB-C device and Windows reports a problem, open Device Manager and note the error code. Follow Microsoft’s guidance for that code rather than applying unrelated driver instructions: Fix USB-C problems in Windows. If the device remains absent from Disk Management after connection checks, Windows has not presented it as a disk or volume that you can fix by assigning a drive letter.

Check whether macOS detects the drive
Open Disk Utility and choose View > Show All Devices, if that option is available in your macOS version. Check the sidebar for the flash drive. Finder is where you normally browse and use an attached storage device, so a drive missing from Finder alone does not establish hardware failure. Apple’s Mac storage guide describes connecting external storage, including thumb drives, and looking for it in Finder.
If the device appears in Disk Utility
If the drive appears there but not in Finder, select it in Disk Utility. Apple’s Disk Utility instructions explain how First Aid checks and repairs certain formatting and directory-structure errors. First Aid is not a reason to erase the drive; do not erase it unless you have protected the files or accept losing them.

If the device does not appear in Disk Utility
Check the cable or adapter, try another port, and connect directly rather than through a hub. If it remains absent from the Disk Utility sidebar after those checks, Apple says the Mac or the storage device might need service. Disk Utility cannot repair a device it does not show.

Eject the drive safely when it works
When the flash drive is mounted and usable, eject it through the operating system before unplugging it. Microsoft recommends safely removing hardware to reduce the risk of data loss. Safely remove hardware in Windows
