For a wall with two displays, Raspberry Pi 5 is the clearest Raspberry Pi choice: it can drive two screens at up to 4K (3840 × 2160) at 60 Hz without extra configuration. Raspberry Pi 4 can suit a lower display target, but a single Pi 5 cannot directly drive more than two displays. For a larger wall, first decide how the screens should relate to one another, then choose multiple players or an external video-wall routing system to match.

Start with the wall’s display layout

Count the panels, then decide what each should show. This choice affects whether you need one Raspberry Pi, several playback devices, or a separate display-routing or video-wall controller.

  • Independent content: each panel shows its own image or video. Plan for enough playback outputs and devices to provide those separate feeds.
  • Duplicated content: panels show the same image. A suitable distribution system may route one source to multiple displays, but check that the hardware fits your display modes and installation.
  • One extended canvas: a single image spans several panels. The solution must support the wall’s geometry and content layout; board specifications alone do not establish how to configure or synchronize it.

For more than two panels, Raspberry Pi’s direct-output specifications do not determine which controller, routing hardware, or synchronization method will work. Panel count, layout, cable distances, source arrangement, and tolerance for timing differences all matter.

Compare the Raspberry Pi options

Use case Practical choice Display limit to plan around
Two displays, up to 4K at 60 Hz each Raspberry Pi 5 At most two directly attached displays.
Two displays where 4K at 30 Hz is sufficient Raspberry Pi 4 may be sufficient Its documented dual-display modes include two 4K displays at 30 Hz or two 1080p displays at 60 Hz, not dual 4K at 60 Hz.
More than two panels Multiple playback devices or suitable external routing/controller hardware The right design depends on whether content is independent, duplicated, or one spanning canvas, and on synchronization needs.

Raspberry Pi 5 for a two-screen wall

Raspberry Pi 5 has two micro-HDMI outputs and supports two displays at up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz without additional configuration, according to Raspberry Pi Ltd’s configuration documentation checked in 2026. The board’s official product page lists 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB configurations; Raspberry Pi does not specify a universal memory minimum for video-wall use. Choose memory based on the playback application and workload.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pi 5 includes an H.265/HEVC hardware decoder enabled by default, according to Raspberry Pi’s current config.txt documentation. That establishes a hardware decoding capability, not compatibility with a particular player, media format, or multi-device synchronization scheme. Confirm those parts with the software and content you intend to deploy.

Raspberry Pi 4 when its modes meet the target

Raspberry Pi Ltd’s configuration documentation checked in 2026 lists two 4K displays at 30 Hz or two 1080p displays at 60 Hz for Pi 4. It also documents a mode in which the HDMI0 display can reach 4K at 60 Hz with a configuration setting while the second output runs at a lower supported mode. Choose Pi 4 only when the actual per-screen resolution and refresh-rate targets fit its documented modes.

Check the whole video signal path

A monitor with a standard full-size HDMI input generally needs a micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable for each Pi 5 output. Check that each cable, monitor, adapter, and any intervening routing equipment supports the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use; the Pi’s output capability does not guarantee that every link in the chain can carry the selected mode.

Raspberry Pi says its models do not support monitor video over USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode. Do not plan to connect a Pi 5 monitor through USB-C as a video output.

Plan power and cooling for sustained playback

Power

Raspberry Pi recommends a 5 V, 5 A supply for Pi 5 and recommends its 27 W USB-C supply. With a 5 V, 3 A supply, peripheral power is limited to 600 mA, according to Raspberry Pi Ltd’s getting-started guidance checked in 2026. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 product FAQ warns: “Raspberry Pi 5 is a higher-performance computer than Raspberry Pi 4, and you may have problems using an under-powered supply.”

Cooling and enclosure

Raspberry Pi says Pi 5 performs best with active cooling and identifies a case with an integrated fan as one option. Treat cooling as an installation decision: workload, enclosure, and airflow affect what is appropriate. The manufacturer’s guidance does not establish that every deployment requires the same cooling arrangement.

Verify the complete setup before deployment

  1. Count the panels and decide whether they need separate content, duplicated content, or one image spanning the wall.
  2. Write down each display’s target resolution and refresh rate. Check the monitor, cable, adapter, and controller specifications against those targets.
  3. Choose Pi 5 for up to two directly connected displays when you need dual 4K at 60 Hz. Consider Pi 4 only if its documented modes meet your targets.
  4. For Pi 5, use micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cables with ordinary HDMI monitors. Do not rely on USB-C for monitor video.
  5. Provide the recommended Pi 5 power and cooling appropriate to the workload and enclosure.
  6. Test the chosen playback application, codecs, display arrangement, restart behavior, and synchronization using the actual content and equipment before installation.

For a wall larger than two directly attached screens, select any extenders, distribution equipment, or video-wall controller only after you know the panel count, geometry, cable distances, source layout, and synchronization requirements. The official Raspberry Pi display specifications do not establish a maximum wall size or identify a compatible third-party controller.

Raspberry Pi Ltd states that Pi 5 production is planned to continue until at least January 2036 on its product page, as checked in 2026. That can be relevant when choosing hardware for a deployment with a long planned service life.
