Quantum error correction does not repeatedly measure each data qubit to ask whether it is 0 or 1. Instead, it spreads one logical qubit’s information across several physical qubits, measures selected relationships among them, and gives a classical decoder the resulting error syndrome. Those checks can reveal evidence of an error without directly revealing the encoded quantum state.

How does quantum error correction work?

A physical qubit is a hardware-level quantum unit, and disturbances such as unwanted fields or temperature changes can alter it. Quantum error correction (QEC) protects information by encoding it collectively across multiple physical qubits. The group represents a logical qubit: quantum information distributed in a way that lets a computer check for certain errors without reading out the logical value itself.

The redundancy is not simply a set of copies that can each be inspected. A qubit can be in a superposition, and quantum information cannot be protected by measuring every constituent qubit and taking a majority vote. Instead, a code defines relationships—often called stabilizers or parity checks—that should have known outcomes when the encoded system is behaving as expected.

Ancillary measurement qubits interact with groups of data qubits to measure those relationships. The outcomes form a syndrome. A classical decoder analyzes the syndrome, often over several rounds, and infers which error pattern is most likely. The syndrome is evidence, not a perfect label naming the exact physical fault.

How can you detect a qubit error without measuring it?

The checks measure properties of the encoded group rather than the logical qubit’s 0-or-1 value or its full quantum state. If an error changes one of the code’s expected relationships, the relevant check outcomes change. That flags a problem while leaving the encoded logical information unmeasured.

A classical repetition code illustrates the basic idea: if a bit is stored redundantly as 000 or 111, checking whether neighboring bits agree can reveal a bit flip without needing to know whether the intended value was 000 or 111. A quantum repetition code uses parity checks for an analogous limited purpose. But quantum codes must preserve superpositions and handle phase errors too, so this classical analogy is incomplete: simply reading all the encoded qubits and voting would destroy information the computer needs to retain.

Bit-flip and phase-flip errors need different checks

A bit-flip error changes the computational-basis value, while a phase-flip error changes the relative phase between components of a superposition. A simple repetition code can make one type especially easy to detect and correct, but does not, by itself, correct both types at once. Surface codes use complementary stabilizer checks to protect against both bit and phase errors.

What happens during a correction cycle?

  1. Encode the information. Prepare data qubits in a code space that represents one logical qubit collectively across the hardware.
  2. Measure checks. Ancillary measurement qubits interact with selected groups of data qubits and extract parity or stabilizer values. These are checks on relationships, not direct measurements of the logical state.
  3. Repeat the checks. Multiple rounds create a history of syndrome changes. Comparing rounds helps distinguish data-qubit faults from faulty measurements; it does not guarantee that every fault will be identified.
  4. Decode the syndrome history. A classical algorithm uses the observed outcomes and a model of likely noise to infer the most probable fault pattern. Several physical error patterns can be consistent with the same evidence, and too many or correlated faults can mislead the decoder.
  5. Protect the logical result. The system may apply a physical correction, or it may keep track of the inferred correction and reinterpret later logical measurement outcomes. Fault-tolerant computation does not always require physically changing the code state after every inferred error.

The check process itself is imperfect. Initialization, gates, measurements, and decoding can all contribute faults. Google’s repetition-code explainer describes one-microsecond rounds in its particular experiment; that is an experimental detail, not a universal QEC cycle duration.

What is a logical qubit?

A logical qubit is quantum information encoded across multiple physical qubits so that errors can be detected and, within the code’s limits, corrected. It is not a single special hardware qubit, nor is it literally error-free. Its reliability depends on the physical devices, the code, the check circuits, the decoder, and how errors behave in the implementation.

Code distance describes the minimum number of physical errors that can combine into an undetected logical failure. Increasing the distance generally improves protection, but requires more physical resources. The exact number of physical qubits per logical qubit depends on the code definition and layout; a simple universal conversion does not apply.

When does adding error correction help?

QEC is useful only when its protective checks and operations are reliable enough. A code has a threshold associated with a particular implementation and noise model: below that boundary, increasing protection can reduce logical error; above it, adding qubits and operations may create more opportunities for faults than the code can handle. There is no single threshold number that applies to every quantum computer.

Fault tolerance is broader than detecting an error in memory. It means designing the computation so imperfect operations do not spread faults uncontrollably and the logical computation remains reliable. Correlated errors—faults that affect multiple qubits together or persist across rounds—can be harder to decode than isolated errors, so practical protection depends on managing the noise and measurement process as well as adding redundancy.

Correction and error mitigation are also different. Correction encodes information and uses checks to detect and handle faults during a computation. Mitigation estimates or reduces the effect of errors in results without necessarily protecting an encoded logical qubit throughout the computation.

What have recent quantum error-correction experiments shown?

Published results demonstrate meaningful progress in particular devices and protocols, not a like-for-like ranking of all quantum computers. The examples below use different architectures, assumptions, and target demonstrations.

Source and year Reported result What it establishes
Google Quantum AI and collaborators, Nature, 2025 A distance-7 surface-code memory used 101 physical qubits and reported 0.143% ± 0.003% logical error per correction cycle. Its logical-memory lifetime was 2.4 ± 0.3 times that of the best constituent physical qubit in the experiment. The paper reported a below-threshold surface-code memory whose lifetime exceeded that of its best constituent physical qubit in this experiment. The result does not by itself establish a general-purpose, large-scale fault-tolerant computer.
Google Quantum AI and collaborators, Nature, 2025 At distance 5, the paper reported an average decoder latency of 63 microseconds alongside a 1.1-microsecond correction-cycle time. Decoder latency and cycle time are different reported quantities; the figures should not be treated as interchangeable timing measures.
IBM Research, 2024 A paper reported preserving 12 logical qubits for nearly one million syndrome cycles using 288 physical qubits, assuming a 0.1% physical error rate. This is a code-family result under the paper’s stated assumption, not a report of an available commercial processor.
IBM Research, 2024 The paper reported a 0.7% error threshold for its standard circuit-based noise model and studied code family. This is model- and code-specific, not a universal QEC threshold.

The 2025 Nature paper described its result as indicating device performance that, if scaled, could meet requirements for large-scale fault-tolerant algorithms. That conditional matters: extending a successful memory demonstration into a large computation requires scaling the system while maintaining the necessary error rates, operations, decoding, and fault management.

For broad context, NIST’s “Quantum Computing Explained” says current leading quantum devices make an error roughly once per thousand operations. The page’s publication date is not surfaced, so this is a general explainer estimate, not a current benchmark for every device.

What should you take away from a QEC claim?

  • Check whether a reported result concerns physical-qubit errors, logical-memory errors, or a full fault-tolerant computation; these are different achievements.
  • Look for the code, code distance, noise assumptions, and experimental scope attached to any quoted threshold or error rate.
  • Distinguish a decoder’s inference from certainty about the exact fault: syndrome data can be ambiguous, especially with multiple or correlated errors.
  • Remember that a logical qubit is more protected, not invulnerable. QEC’s promise depends on keeping the full implementation below its relevant threshold.
