Use Babel to emit JavaScript and transform modern syntax, and use TypeScript separately to check types. Install @babel/preset-typescript and @babel/preset-env, configure Babel for your source files and actual browser or runtime targets, then run tsc --noEmit as a distinct build step. Babel removes TypeScript syntax; it does not validate types.
Choose which tool emits JavaScript
In a common hybrid setup, Babel transforms TypeScript source into JavaScript while the TypeScript compiler checks the program. This lets you use Babel’s JavaScript syntax transforms without treating Babel as a replacement for TypeScript’s type checker. The TypeScript Handbook describes this division of work in its Babel with TypeScript guidance.
| Workflow | JavaScript emitter | Type checking | Declaration files | Syntax support and modules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Babel emission with TypeScript checking | Babel | Run TypeScript separately, typically with tsc --noEmit. |
Use TypeScript declaration emit as a separate step if publishing declarations. | Babel transforms syntax according to @babel/preset-env targets; module output depends on preset configuration and build integration. |
| TypeScript emission | tsc |
TypeScript compiler checks types as part of compilation. | TypeScript can emit declarations when configured to do so. | This is an alternative when TypeScript should handle JavaScript emission rather than Babel; configure its output for the project’s runtime and build setup. |
The hybrid workflow is useful when Babel is already responsible for the build’s JavaScript transforms. Do not assume the two emitters can be enabled indiscriminately: decide which one owns emitted JavaScript, and avoid relying on both to transform the same source in incompatible ways.
Install and configure Babel’s presets
Add the Babel packages required by your build pipeline: @babel/preset-typescript to strip TypeScript syntax and @babel/preset-env to select JavaScript syntax transforms for your targets. If your source contains JSX or TSX that needs React’s JSX transform, add @babel/preset-react as well. See the official docs for @babel/preset-typescript, @babel/preset-env, and @babel/preset-react.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A representative configuration in babel.config.json is:
{
"presets": [
["@babel/preset-env", { "targets": { "node": "current" } }],
"@babel/preset-typescript"
]
}
node: "current" is only an example target; replace it with the actual Node version, browsers, or other runtime your project supports. Preset order and options can matter because Babel applies presets in reverse order. Adjust this representative shape to your Babel version and build integration rather than copying it as a universal configuration.

Match the TypeScript preset to your file extensions
Babel’s TypeScript preset documents extension-specific behavior for .ts, .tsx, .mts, and .cts files. Its current documentation enables that behavior by default and describes ignoreExtensions for cases such as nonstandard file extensions. If using Babel CLI or Node CLI to process TypeScript files, include .ts in the CLI extensions setting so those files are handled.
Configure JSX and TSX explicitly
The TypeScript preset strips TypeScript syntax; it is not a general React JSX transform. For React JSX or TSX, configure suitable JSX handling, commonly by adding @babel/preset-react, and make sure the TypeScript preset’s extension handling includes the relevant TSX files.

Set targets to the environments you actually support
@babel/preset-env selects syntax transforms based on configured browser or runtime targets. Set those targets from your deployment and support policy, not from an arbitrary example: a modern Node target and a browser-support range can require different transforms. Babel’s preset-env documentation describes it as a way to choose syntax transforms and, optionally, browser polyfills for target environments. Do not infer support for an environment that is absent from the target configuration.
Syntax transformation and API availability are separate concerns. A syntax transform does not, by itself, establish that every newer JavaScript API exists in the target runtime; review the project’s polyfill strategy if it relies on APIs that may be missing.

Keep module handling aligned with the build tool
When Babel is integrated with a bundler, generally leave preset-env’s modules option at its auto default. The caller information supplied by the integration can guide module handling. Set modules: false when preserving ES module syntax is the intended output, such as when the bundler should process those imports and exports itself. Choose based on the actual integration rather than setting either value reflexively.
Run type checking and declaration emit separately
Babel’s TypeScript transform removes type syntax but does not type-check the program. Babel also does not automatically follow changes to tsconfig.json; Babel’s transform has its own behavior and operates with isolated-module assumptions. A successful Babel build therefore does not establish that the source passes TypeScript checks.

- Use Babel in the build pipeline to emit JavaScript with the TypeScript and environment presets configured for the source and targets.
- Run
tsc --noEmitas a separate check, or use an equivalent TypeScript type-checking step. - If distributing TypeScript declarations, configure and run TypeScript declaration emit separately from Babel’s JavaScript transform.
Babel documents this limitation directly in its TypeScript transform documentation: the transform does not add type-checking. Syntactically transformable code can still fail TypeScript checks or behave unexpectedly, so keep the checker in the build or CI process wherever type correctness is required.
Account for Babel version and import-extension behavior
Preset options and defaults can change between Babel major versions. For example, the current preset documentation says onlyRemoveTypeImports defaults to true in Babel 8 and that allowDeclareFields will be enabled by default in Babel 8. Check the documentation for the Babel version installed in the project before depending on a default; do not assume those Babel 8 behaviors apply to earlier versions.
If source imports explicitly include .ts extensions, consider the preset’s rewriteImportExtensions option to rewrite them to JavaScript extensions in emitted code. This choice needs to match the project’s module-resolution and runtime conventions; Babel’s documentation discusses it alongside TypeScript options such as allowImportingTsExtensions and rewriteRelativeImportExtensions. See the preset documentation before enabling it.
