Figma Dev Mode gives developers a focused workspace to inspect designs, review implementation details and carry handoff context into their workflow. It can expose measurements, properties, annotations, assets and code snippets, but it cannot decide unstated behavior or replace a conversation with the designer. A design file shows what has been documented; teams still need to discuss what remains ambiguous.

What Figma Dev Mode does

Figma describes Dev Mode as a developer-focused interface for navigating design files and implementing designs. It brings inspection and handoff tools together so developers can explore the design and its context without treating the canvas as the only source of implementation information. See Figma’s Guide to Dev Mode and Dev Mode overview.

  • Inspect designs: Review layer properties and measurements, and navigate the file with developer-focused inspection tools.
  • Find handoff context: Review annotations, ready-for-development views, developer links and related implementation context.
  • Track design changes: Compare versions to see what has changed since an earlier design state.
  • Explore components: Use component playgrounds to inspect variants and component details.
  • Copy snippets and export assets: Dev Mode can provide code snippets and asset export options. These help with implementation, but a snippet is not necessarily complete production code.
  • Work across tools: Figma for VS Code lets developers inspect and navigate designs from within an editor. Figma also documents integrations for connecting design and development workflows.

These features make design information easier to find; they do not guarantee that every requirement is present in the file. Figma’s developer documentation covers its integration options at Figma Developers.

What code snippets can—and cannot—tell you

Automatically generated snippets are useful references for inspected design properties, but they should not be mistaken for a complete implementation. With Code Connect, a team can show its connected component code in place of automatically generated snippets for components that have been connected to its design system. That can make handoff more representative of the team’s actual library and conventions. It does not automatically resolve unconnected components or explain project-specific behavior. See Figma Code Connect and its Code Connect help article.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What developers still need designers to explain

Inspection can reveal dimensions, variables, layer structure, component identity, annotations and links when those details are present. It cannot infer every decision behind a design. Before implementation, ask the designer to clarify any consequential behavior the file does not specify, such as:

  • Interaction: What a control does, and how loading, empty, error, hover, focus or disabled states behave.
  • Responsive behavior: What changes at different viewport sizes, including which elements wrap, move, resize or disappear.
  • Content rules: Which text and imagery are fixed, which are dynamic, and how unusually long or missing content should be handled.
  • Accessibility intent: Expected keyboard behavior, focus order, labels and other accessibility details that the design does not make explicit.
  • Project-specific choices: How the design should fit existing components, technical constraints or product requirements.

These are practical questions for a handoff, not a claim that Figma formally lists them as product limitations. The key distinction is whether a decision is actually documented: do not treat an absent state or behavior as settled simply because the visual design can be inspected.

How to make a Figma handoff more useful

  1. Put context beside the design. Add concise annotations to the relevant frame or layer so a developer can connect an instruction to the element it describes.
  2. Mark work ready when it is ready. Use the ready-for-development workflow to signal that a design is prepared for implementation, rather than relying on developers to infer status from the file.
  3. Link the surrounding work. Add relevant ticket and code references where the team uses them, so implementation context is discoverable alongside the design.
  4. Resolve open questions before coding. Discuss unclear states, responsive expectations and accessibility behavior with the designer, then record decisions that others will need.
  5. Keep the handoff current. When designs change, update annotations and links and use version comparison to help identify what needs another look.

Figma says in its Dev Mode guide: “With Dev Mode, designers and developers can stay on the same page, making sure important details aren’t lost in the handoff process.” Dev Mode provides places to carry some of those details; the team remains responsible for keeping them accurate and discussing what the file leaves open.

Do developers need a paid Dev seat?

Not necessarily. Figma’s pricing FAQ says free viewers can inspect measurements and property values, copy CSS, iOS and Android code, export assets, comment and collaborate. Paid Dev Mode adds capabilities beyond the standard inspect experience, so the answer depends on which features a developer needs and what seat access the team has. Check Figma’s pricing FAQ for current eligibility.

How to decide whether Dev Mode fits your team

  • Start with the free inspection workflow: Check whether view-only access covers your team’s need for measurements, properties, snippets, assets and collaboration.
  • Identify the missing workflow: Consider whether developers need ready-for-dev queues, annotations, version comparison, component playgrounds or integrations beyond standard inspection.
  • Check design-system alignment: If you use Code Connect, confirm that the components developers rely on are connected and that the displayed code reflects the library and conventions they actually use.
  • Consider where developers work: Teams that spend most of their time in an editor may benefit from Figma for VS Code or other connected tools; teams comfortable in Figma may not need that workflow.
  • Verify access and cost: Compare the required features with current seat eligibility and pricing for your plan.

The best fit is the workflow that makes the right design information accessible without pretending that inspection settles decisions the team has not documented.
