AI API providers manage backward compatibility through versioning, deprecation notices, migration guidance, and shutdown dates—but they do not guarantee that every model, endpoint, SDK, or hosted platform will remain unchanged. To keep a production integration working, track notices for the exact services you use and test changes against your own application before a cutoff.
What backward compatibility means for AI APIs
Backward compatibility means an existing integration continues to work after a provider changes its service. For AI APIs, that can involve several distinct layers: the HTTP API and its request or response schema, an SDK, a model’s availability, or a model’s behavior. These layers do not necessarily change together. An endpoint can remain callable while a model is retired, and a request can still be accepted while a model snapshot produces different results.
Provider policies describe how changes are announced and managed; they are not a universal guarantee of unchanged behavior. The official material from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google reviewed on October 4, 2026, does not establish a comparable industry-wide rate of breaking changes or integration failures.
How the providers describe changes
| Provider | What may change and what guidance is published | What developers should take from it |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI | OpenAI says it aims to avoid breaking changes in major API versions where reasonably possible. Its guidance treats some model snapshot behavior changes as compatible and publishes deprecation notices with minimum notice periods, shutdown dates, and suggested replacements. OpenAI compatibility and deprecation guidance. | Watch both API notices and model deprecations. A model can behave differently even when the API remains callable. |
| Anthropic | Anthropic publishes model deprecation schedules, recommends testing replacement models on application tasks before retirement, and says partner-operated Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud schedules can differ from Anthropic-operated platforms. Anthropic model deprecations. | Check the schedule for the platform actually serving the model, then validate any replacement against your workload. |
| Google Gemini API | Google documents changes in release notes. For the Interactions API, a schema migration was staged through an opt-in period, a default change, and sunset of the legacy schema. Gemini API release notes and Interactions API migration guide. | Follow notices for the specific API and update parsing code and SDKs before a legacy format is removed. |
What a deprecation notice does—and does not—promise
A deprecation notice is a signal to plan a migration, not a promise of indefinite support. OpenAI’s policy, reviewed October 4, 2026, says generally available models receive at least six months’ notice and specialized variants at least three months’ notice. The policy allows a faster timeline when safety or compliance requires it. It also provides shutdown dates and suggested replacements; those suggestions do not prove that a replacement will behave equivalently for a particular application. OpenAI deprecation policy.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For Anthropic models, the relevant dates can depend on where the model is hosted. Anthropic says Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud partner-operated schedules may differ from its own platform’s schedule. Check the lifecycle information for the actual serving platform rather than assuming the model creator’s dates apply everywhere. Anthropic model deprecations.
A concrete example: Gemini Interactions API schema migration
Google’s Interactions API migration shows how a provider can stage a breaking response-schema change without making the transition automatic for every integration. The response field changed from outputs to steps; the rollout included an opt-in date, a default flip, and a sunset for the legacy schema.

| Milestone | Date and effect |
|---|---|
| Opt-in | May 7, 2026: developers could opt into the new schema. |
| Default flip | May 26, 2026: the new schema became the default. |
| Legacy sunset | June 8, 2026: the old REST schema was to be removed. The migration guide says Python and JavaScript SDK 1.x versions would break for Interactions API calls after this sunset. |
These dates describe Google’s 2026 migration, not a general timetable for future changes. The practical lesson is to update SDKs and response parsing during the transition, then test against the new schema before the old path disappears. How to keep a production integration working
- Inventory dependencies. Record every provider, serving platform, model, endpoint, API feature, and SDK version used in production. Include partner hosting where applicable.
- Monitor the right notices. Follow the provider’s changelog and deprecation page for each API and model in use. Record announced migration dates and shutdown dates in the system that tracks operational work.
- Pin versions when reproducibility matters. Use a model snapshot where available and appropriate, but treat pinning as a way to control changes—not a guarantee of permanent availability. A pinned snapshot can still be deprecated.
- Test the integration contract. Add tests for request parameters, response structure, tool calls, error handling, and any assumptions made by downstream code. Run them against the new version or schema before switching production traffic.
- Evaluate replacement models on real tasks. Build a representative set of application inputs and quality requirements, then compare the replacement before the retirement date. A provider’s suggested successor is a starting point, not evidence of equivalence for your use case.
- Complete schema and SDK migrations early. Update response parsing and SDK versions, exercise the new path in a test environment, and leave time to diagnose issues before the legacy path is shut down.
What to verify before a migration deadline
- The notice applies to the exact model, endpoint, feature, and hosting platform your application uses.
- Your application handles the replacement’s response shape and error cases, not just a successful sample request.
- Any required SDK upgrade is deployed and tested; old SDK versions may stop working when a schema is removed.
- Representative application tasks still meet your quality requirements on the replacement model.
- Monitoring and rollback plans are ready for the production changeover.
