Choose a local walk first, then register as its team leader, invite people to join, and use the event’s official fundraising page to ask for donations. Walk organizers set their own dates, routes, registration steps, and requirements, so confirm those details on the page for your specific event.

1. Choose the local walk and check its details

There is no single signup process for every breast cancer walk. For example, the American Cancer Society (ACS) runs Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, while Susan G. Komen runs the MORE THAN PINK Walk. Start with the organizer’s event finder or local event listing and confirm the date, location, route, registration instructions, and any team or fundraising requirements.

ACS says Making Strides events primarily take place in October, with some in late September. Its current event guidance gives route lengths of 2.5 to 5 miles, varying by event and location. Those details do not apply automatically to other walks, so use your chosen event’s page as the final reference. ACS Making Strides event information; Komen MORE THAN PINK Walk information.

2. Register as the team leader

Open the local event’s registration page and follow its instructions to create or lead a team. On Making Strides, ACS lists options to lead a team, join a team, or participate solo. Komen directs participants to MORE THAN PINK Walk information and local event listings. Use the registration route for the organizer you selected rather than assuming the two programs work the same way.

3. Give the team a clear purpose and invite people

Decide who or what the team is walking for: you might honor someone, remember someone, or support the cause as a group. Then invite friends, family, and coworkers with a direct message that includes the event name, date, location, and how to join or donate. ACS specifically recommends recruiting friends and family; neither organizer requires a particular team size in the cited guidance.

Community activities

A small fundraiser can complement online asks if your team has the time and volunteers. In a Komen participant story, one team used donated items for a gift-basket fundraiser and later tried other community activities. That is one team’s experience, not a promise of typical proceeds or a guarantee that a particular idea will work. Komen’s story about Suzanne’s team.

6. Coordinate the team before walk day

Keep one shared message with the local event details, the team fundraising page, and any organizer instructions. As the event approaches, check the local page for route, event-day logistics, and volunteer information. ACS identifies team leadership and event-day volunteering as available roles. For a route in the 2.5-to-5-mile range, comfortable walking shoes are a practical optional preparation; ACS does not prescribe a particular footwear choice.

  • Confirm the event date, location, and route with the organizer.
  • Make sure each participant knows how to register under the team.
  • Share the official donation page and ask teammates to personalize their outreach.
  • Check local event instructions for deadlines, requirements, and volunteer opportunities.

How to choose between walks

If more than one event is available nearby, compare the local date and route, team registration process, fundraising requirements, workplace and team tools, and local support or volunteer roles. ACS and Komen have distinct programs and signup routes; the reviewed organizer information does not establish a single set of terms or a universal comparison. Use each local event’s current page to make the decision.
