A job is genuinely flexible only if its actual hours, workdays, location and rules fit what you need—not simply because the advert uses the word “flexible.” Identify your non-negotiables, ask how the arrangement works in this specific role, and get any agreed pattern recorded in writing.
What “flexible working” can mean
Flexibility can apply to different parts of a job: the number of hours worked, start and finish times, days worked, or work location. An employer may offer choice in one area while keeping another fixed. GOV.UK outlines these different forms of flexible working in its overview of flexible working.
That is why labels alone are poor evidence. “Part-time” describes hours, not necessarily control over when those hours fall. “Hybrid” says a role includes more than one work location; it does not, by itself, establish that you choose your office days. “Flexible working considered” signals a possibility, not a confirmed arrangement. These are practical distinctions for assessing a role, not legal definitions.
Define the flexibility you need before applying
Write down the conditions that would make the job workable. Separate what is essential from what you could negotiate or change. JobHelp’s guidance on finding flexible work recommends considering factors including hours, income, suitable times, constraints and alternatives.

- Hours: How many hours must you work each week? What is your earliest workable start and latest workable finish?
- Days: Which days can you work, and are any days unavailable?
- Location: How often can you attend a workplace, and what commute is realistic?
- Predictability: How much advance notice do you need if the schedule changes?
- Income and trade-offs: Would a different pattern change your pay or affect other priorities?
- Alternatives: Is there another schedule that would meet your needs if your first choice is not possible?
Check whether the advert describes a real arrangement
Look for role-specific details rather than the word “flexible” by itself. Does the advert say whether the role is remote or hybrid, give expected workplace attendance, describe flexi-time, or identify fixed hours? The UK government’s recruitment guidance recommends that employers give examples of the arrangements available and explain their approach to flexible working in job adverts. The guidance applies to England, Scotland and Wales; see the government’s guidance for advertising flexible working arrangements.
Establish which of these three situations applies:
- Built into the role: The advert or employer describes a defined pattern as part of the job.
- Open to agreement: The employer is willing to discuss a pattern for this role, but its details are not settled.
- Potentially available through a later request: The role has standard arrangements, and you may ask to change them after starting. A request is not a promise that the change will be accepted.
If the advert is silent, do not assume the employer will refuse flexibility. JobHelp advises candidates to contact the employer and ask whether it is open to flexible working.

Questions to ask in the interview
Ask about the job’s normal practice, not just the organisation’s general policy. The following questions make a broad claim testable:
- “What does flexible working mean for this specific role?”
- “Which hours, days or attendance requirements are fixed, and which can I choose?”
- “How many days on site are expected, and can that requirement change?”
- “Are there core hours when I must be available?”
- “How much notice is usually given when working patterns change?”
- “How are requests handled, and who makes the decision?”
- “Could the proposed pattern be tried for an agreed period and reviewed?”
- “If we agree a pattern, can it be included in the written offer or employment terms?”
Acas guidance says discussions should explore a flexible-working request and possible alternatives; a trial period may help assess whether a pattern is workable where appropriate. It does not require every employer to offer a trial. See the Acas Code of Practice on requests for flexible working.

Compare two “flexible” jobs on the same terms
Use the same criteria for each role so that a broad label does not obscure important differences. A simple comparison can show where the fit is strong and where you still need an answer.

| Income and other trade-offs | Would the pattern change pay or involve another practical cost? |
Get agreed details in writing
A positive verbal answer is useful, but it may leave important questions open. Before relying on a proposed pattern, confirm the schedule, location, workplace attendance, notice rules and any review date. Check whether the arrangement is part of the employment terms or is subject to a policy that may change.

Ask for the agreed arrangement to appear clearly in the written offer or employment terms. GOV.UK says that when an employer accepts a statutory flexible-working request, it must change the employee’s terms and conditions. Its guidance on applying for flexible working also explains the process employers must follow.

In England, Scotland and Wales, employees can make a statutory request for flexible working from their first day in a job. GOV.UK describes this as a right to request: it does not guarantee approval of a particular schedule or mean every role can accommodate it. A request may concern hours, start or finish times, days worked or work location. Northern Ireland has different rules; the guidance cited here should not be applied there.

GOV.UK says an employer must discuss an application before refusing it and decide within two months, unless both sides agree to extend that period. An employer can refuse a request for a good business reason. If it accepts the request, it must change the employment terms and conditions. This is a general summary of the process, not advice about an individual dispute.
If the arrangement is unclear or not advertised
Contact the employer before applying or use the interview to ask whether the pattern you need is possible in this role. If the employer cannot give a clear answer, treat the arrangement as unconfirmed rather than assuming the most favourable interpretation.
