If Google Pay (now Google Wallet) or Samsung Wallet will not tap at checkout, first check that NFC is on, the intended wallet is the default contactless app, and the card is ready to use. Then note whether the phone confirms the tap: no confirmation usually points to the phone-reader connection; a confirmation followed by a decline points more toward the reader, store acceptance, card network, or bank.

Start with the phone and wallet setup

Work through these checks before repeating the tap. Android menu labels vary by phone, software version, and region.

  1. Turn on NFC. Your phone needs NFC hardware, and NFC must be enabled for contactless payments. On a Galaxy phone, look under Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payments. Google’s overview of phone requirements is in Google Wallet’s tap-to-pay guide.
  2. Select the wallet you intend to use as the default. Google’s instructions place this setting in Android’s NFC or contactless payment settings; the exact path differs by device. For Samsung’s US Galaxy instructions, the path is Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payments > Default wallet app > Samsung Wallet. See Google’s default payment app instructions or Samsung’s Galaxy NFC troubleshooting guide.
  3. Check that the card is ready. In Google Wallet, “Card not set up” means complete setup and any issuer verification. “Card suspended” means the issuer needs to address the card’s status. Confirm that your card and country are supported; Google lists its requirements in the tap-to-pay guide.
  4. Unlock the phone and authenticate if asked. Google says to unlock before paying and use an accepted Android screen-lock method if prompted. If the phone asks for a PIN during payment, enter the phone’s screen-lock PIN on the phone—not your card PIN on the checkout terminal. See Google’s contactless troubleshooting instructions.

If the phone does not confirm the tap

If you see no checkmark or other phone-side confirmation, focus on the NFC connection between the handset and reader.

  • Hold the phone close to the reader and keep it there for a few seconds. If the first position does not work, try another orientation; the NFC antenna’s position varies by model.
  • Remove a thick case or accessories that contain magnets, cards, or metal, then try again. Samsung warns that some such covers can interfere with NFC communication in its Galaxy troubleshooting guidance.
  • On a Galaxy device, switch NFC off and back on, then retry. Samsung includes this as a troubleshooting step in the same support guide.

If the phone confirms but the sale fails

A checkmark or tick on the phone does not necessarily mean the store completed the sale. If the terminal or cashier reports an error after the phone confirms the tap, investigate acceptance and authorization rather than repeatedly adjusting the antenna.

  • Try another reader if one is available, and ask whether the store accepts mobile payments.
  • Check whether that terminal accepts contactless payments for your card’s network. Google notes that a terminal may accept contactless transactions for some card networks but not the network on the card you are using.
  • If the reader accepts your card network but the payment is declined, contact the bank or card issuer. The wallet cannot resolve an issuer-side decline.

Google describes these distinctions in its contactless transaction troubleshooting guide.

Samsung-specific follow-up for persistent NFC trouble

If ordinary NFC checks do not resolve a Galaxy problem, Samsung’s troubleshooting page suggests reseating the SIM and restarting the phone. Samsung notes that some NFC services store payment or authentication information on the SIM; its guidance says a replacement may be necessary if the issue continues. Treat this as a later Samsung-specific diagnostic step, not as a reason to replace a SIM for every failed tap. Follow the instructions in Samsung’s Galaxy NFC support guide, and contact Samsung support if the issue persists.
