Before downloading a quantized local AI model, check that the exact file is trustworthy, licensed for your use, supported by your inference software, and a fit for your available storage and memory. “Will this model run on my computer?” depends on more than its quantization label: the model architecture, runtime build, context length, and how you split work between CPU and GPU all matter.
Will this model run on my computer?
There is no universal hardware threshold for a quantized model. Start with the model card’s guidance for the exact file, then check compatibility with the runtime and architecture you plan to use. File size is useful for estimating download and disk needs, but it does not by itself tell you how much RAM or VRAM inference will require.
- Storage: compare the selected file’s actual size with free disk space. Include any additional repository files your workflow needs.
- Memory: check the publisher’s RAM or VRAM estimate, and account for intended context length and runtime. CPU/GPU offloading can also affect the resources required.
- Compatibility: confirm that your runtime version supports the model architecture and the specific file format and quantization.
For example, Featherlabs’ Aura-7b model card lists its Q4_K_M file at about 4.68 GB with an approximate 6 GB VRAM requirement, and its Q2_K file at about 3.02 GB with an approximate 4 GB VRAM requirement. Those are estimates for that model, not general thresholds for other models. The same card’s llama.cpp example notes that longer sequence lengths require more resources. Which quantized model file should I download?
Choose a specific candidate by matching its format and quantization to your runtime, then comparing its size, the publisher’s quality guidance, and your intended use. A label such as Q4_K_M does not establish a universal quality or speed outcome. The model card’s descriptions are publisher guidance, not a standardized independent benchmark; if output quality matters, evaluate the candidate on your task and compare it with a higher-precision alternative where practical.

These figures are the model publisher’s estimates for Aura-7b; they are not independent test results or universal requirements. The card also lists F16, Q8_0, and Q6_K options. Check the file format and runtime support
“Quantized” describes reduced-precision model weights; it does not identify a single file format or guarantee that every application can load the file. Confirm the extension and format, the model architecture, and the runtime version before downloading. GGUF is designed for inference with GGML and executors based on GGML. Its specification describes it as “a binary format that is designed for fast loading and saving of models, and for ease of reading.” GGUF specification

IBM’s GGUF documentation identifies convert-hf-to-gguf.py as the canonical conversion tool and recommends checking converted models with llama.cpp. Support can vary among llama.cpp builds and architectures, so verify the particular model and file against the documentation for the runtime version you intend to use. Verify the model’s identity and source
Use the publisher’s repository or model card to determine what you are downloading. Check the model name, original or base model, author or organization, version, and whether the file is an official release, a fine-tune, or a third-party conversion. GGUF metadata can include fields for author, organization, version, quantizer, source repository, and base-model information. Treat metadata as a clue about provenance, not independent proof that a publisher’s claims are accurate. GGUF specification

For a reproducible download, note the repository and revision. Hugging Face Hub uses the latest revision on main by default; downloads can instead specify a branch, tag, or full commit hash. Read the license before using or sharing weights
Review the license on the model repository and follow the linked terms, especially if you plan commercial use or redistribution. GGUF provides a general.license metadata field for an SPDX license expression, along with separate license-name and license-link fields. Download only the intended file and revision
Repositories may contain several quantizations, formats, and other files. Select the exact variant you need rather than downloading every large file by default. Hugging Face Hub supports downloading an individual filename, filtering files with allow/ignore patterns, selecting a revision, and using dry-run mode to list the files and sizes that would be fetched. - Identify the repository and the exact filename for the format and quantization supported by your runtime.
- Check the model card for file size, memory guidance, architecture support, and license terms.
- Choose the desired branch, tag, or full commit hash if you need a specific or repeatable revision.
- Use the Hub’s dry-run option and file filters to inspect what would download and avoid fetching unneeded variants.
- Record the repository, filename, and revision so you can request the same model state again.
