Use Refresh Firefox only when you accept that it removes many settings and customizations—even though it keeps bookmarks and several other personal-data categories.
Choose the least disruptive fix for the change you made
| Route | Best for | What it changes | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disable profile CSS | A known userChrome.css or userContent.css customization |
Targets the custom UI rules without refreshing the profile. | You must locate and identify the custom file. Mozilla does not officially support this customization method. Mozilla advanced customization guidance |
| Troubleshoot Mode and startup-cache clearing | An unexplained UI, extension, theme, or rendering problem | Temporarily changes the diagnostic environment; clearing the startup cache does not change profile data or add-ons. | It diagnoses problems but does not itself reverse a particular customization. Mozilla troubleshooting guidance |
| Refresh Firefox | A persistent problem after less disruptive diagnosis | Creates a new profile, keeps specified personal data, and removes many settings and customizations. | Modified preferences, toolbar customizations, extensions, themes, and user styles are among the items removed. Mozilla Refresh guidance |
| Create a new profile and transfer selected data | Refresh is unavailable or you need to preserve the original profile while recovering selected data | Leaves the existing profile available while you choose what to move. | Migration is manual; transferring the wrong configuration could bring back the problem. Mozilla troubleshooting guidance and Mozilla old-profile recovery guidance |
| Reset modified preferences | Unwanted or problematic changes made in about:config |
Resets preferences broadly, rather than targeting CSS alone. | Intentional preference changes may be lost; keep a profile backup before file operations. Mozilla advanced customization guidance and Mozilla preference-reset guidance |
Undo a custom Firefox CSS change
If you changed Firefox’s interface with a profile CSS file, disable the custom styles and remove or rename the file. This is narrower than Refresh Firefox and is the best fit when you know the CSS caused the change.
- Open the profile folder. In Firefox, open the menu and choose Help > More Troubleshooting Information. Find Profile Folder, then choose Open Folder (on macOS, the button may be labeled Show in Finder).
- Turn off profile CSS. In a new tab, enter
about:config, accept the warning, search fortoolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets, and set it tofalse. - Rename or remove the CSS file. In the profile folder, open the
chromesubfolder. Rename or remove the applicableuserChrome.cssoruserContent.cssfile. Renaming preserves a copy if you later want to inspect or restore it. - Restart Firefox. Check whether the interface has returned to normal.
Mozilla says it does not officially support adding custom style rules with userChrome.css or userContent.css, or changing preferences through the Configuration Editor (about:config). See Mozilla’s advanced customization and configuration guidance.
Diagnose an unclear UI problem before resetting anything
Test with Troubleshoot Mode
Troubleshoot Mode temporarily disables extensions, uses the default theme, turns off hardware acceleration, and uses default toolbar settings, among other changes. If the problem disappears in this mode, one of the disabled or changed components may be involved. Investigate extensions, themes, toolbar changes, or rendering settings individually after returning to normal mode; Troubleshoot Mode is a diagnostic test, not a permanent reset.

Try the startup cache
If the issue remains unclear, Mozilla lists clearing the startup cache among the steps to try before Refresh. This does not remove profile data or add-ons. Follow the current instructions in Mozilla’s troubleshooting guide.

What Refresh Firefox keeps—and what it removes
Refresh Firefox is a broad profile reset, not a switch that restores only the interface. Mozilla says it creates a new profile and keeps these items:
- Bookmarks
- Browsing and download history
- Passwords
- Cookies
- Web form autofill information
- Personal dictionary
Mozilla says Refresh removes these items:
- Extensions and themes
- Website permissions
- Modified preferences
- Added search engines
- DOM storage
- Security certificate and device settings
- Download actions
- Toolbar customizations
- Profile CSS styles in the
chromesubfolder, includinguserChrome.cssanduserContent.css
So, bookmarks are on the keep list, but toolbar arrangements and modified preferences are not. Review Mozilla’s full, current list at Refresh Firefox – reset add-ons and settings before proceeding.

Find the Refresh option
Mozilla’s Refresh article says the option may be unavailable with the new profile management system unless Firefox is updated to version 150 or later. Mozilla lists April 21, 2026, as the Firefox 150 release date. Availability may therefore depend on your Firefox version and profile setup; check the current Mozilla article if the control is missing.
Protect and recover the old profile
Refresh saves the previous profile in an Old Firefox Data folder on the desktop. Mozilla says some information can be restored by copying files into the new profile, but this is not a reason to copy everything blindly: the old profile may contain the setting or configuration that caused the problem. Transfer only the data you need, using Mozilla’s old-profile recovery guide. The folder can contain sensitive data, so delete it when it is no longer needed and you have confirmed your recovery is complete.

Reset preferences or move data to a new profile
Reset modified preferences
If an unwanted change was made in about:config, Mozilla documents resetting modified preferences through the Configuration Editor or removing the relevant preference file from the profile. Its dedicated preference troubleshooting article also instructs users to rename or delete prefs.js; renaming keeps the old file as a backup. This is broader than undoing one CSS rule and can discard preferences you intended to keep. Before changing profile files, preserve a copy of the profile and follow Mozilla’s preference-reset instructions.
Create a clean profile and transfer only what you need
If Refresh is unavailable or you have extensive customizations to preserve, Mozilla documents creating a new profile and selectively transferring data. Keep the old profile intact while you check that Firefox works correctly in the new one. Then use Mozilla’s recovery guide to identify and restore the specific data you need. A Firefox profile contains personal information such as bookmarks, history, cookies, and passwords; copying every file can also restore the troublesome setting.

Reverting interface changes is not downgrading Firefox
The steps here address profile customizations, preferences, add-ons, and profile problems. They do not recommend installing an older Firefox release. If the interface changed after an update, first identify whether the cause is a customization or a problem that can be diagnosed with Troubleshoot Mode; the Mozilla guidance cited here covers those remedies rather than a downgrade procedure.
