Yes—but “on-device AI” and Gemini in Chrome are different features. Google says Chrome’s on-device generative AI models are downloaded to eligible devices and process data locally. Gemini in Chrome, by contrast, can read the current tab and any tabs you share with it, and Google describes separate logging and activity-storage rules for that feature. Which privacy statement applies depends on what you use.
Does Chrome’s on-device AI use your data?
Chrome’s on-device generative AI features use models stored on your device. Google says their processing happens locally, which it says “can enhance privacy and speed.” That describes the features relying on those models; it is not a blanket guarantee that every AI feature available through Chrome keeps data on your computer.
Chrome Help lists tasks that may use on-device models, including writing or rephrasing, scam warnings, page summaries, and tab organization. Eligibility varies by device and feature. Google’s Enterprise documentation also distinguishes Chrome-built features from other Google AI products accessible through Chrome, which may follow their own terms.
On-device AI versus Gemini in Chrome
Gemini in Chrome is a separate, page-context assistant. It is useful to distinguish it from the downloaded models before deciding what information a feature may handle.

| Question | Chrome on-device generative AI | Gemini in Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the model? | Google says eligible devices download and store the on-device models locally. Google Chrome Help: Manage on-device Generative AI models in Chrome. | A separate feature; the cited Gemini documentation describes data Gemini reads, not a locally stored Chrome model. Google Gemini Apps Help: Gemini Apps Privacy Hub. |
| What page information may be involved? | Google describes processing for features using these models as local. The cited Help page does not state a general rule for every other Chrome AI feature. | By default, Gemini uses the current tab. On a computer, you can share up to 10 open tabs. Google says Gemini collects and processes page content and URLs from the current tab and tabs shared with it. For relevant requests to find pages visited in Chrome, it also collects relevant history URLs. Google Chrome Help: Use Gemini in Chrome and Google Gemini Apps Help: Gemini Apps Privacy Hub. |
| What storage or logging does Google describe? | Model files are downloaded and stored on the device. The cited Chrome Help page does not give an exact file size for each model. | Google says page content used by Gemini in Chrome is logged temporarily to your Google Account and does not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. Website information visited with the feature, as well as audio and files shared with Gemini, is stored in Gemini Apps Activity if Keep Activity is on. The cited Hub does not give one universal deletion deadline. |
| Does a work or school account change the terms? | Enterprise policies may apply; the relevant protections depend on the feature and policy. | Google describes protections for managed accounts, including that prompts and browsing data Gemini reads are not used to train Google’s public models. This is scoped to the managed-account context, not consumer accounts. |
What happens to data when you use Gemini in Chrome?
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says: “Page content will be logged to your Google Account temporarily and will not appear in your Gemini Apps Activity.” That temporary page-content logging is distinct from the Activity setting. If Keep Activity is on, information from websites visited with Gemini in Chrome, along with audio and files shared with Gemini, is stored in Gemini Apps Activity. The Hub does not establish a single retention period for all of these categories.
Page information Gemini uses may include content that is not visible to you on the page. Treat tab sharing as an explicit choice: review which tabs you have shared and avoid giving the assistant access to pages containing information you do not want it to process.

How much storage does Chrome’s on-device AI need?
Google Chrome Help specifies approximately 20 GB of free disk space as a requirement for downloading the models. This is the stated free-space requirement, not the published size of the model files; Google does not list a precise per-model file size on that page. Google notes requirements may change.
Downloads require an unmetered connection, sufficient device performance, and supported hardware. Eligibility is not universal. Chrome for Developers reported on October 1, 2025, that CPU inference for Gemini Nano was rolling out in Chrome 140 on Linux, macOS, and Windows, expanding support beyond GPUs. That dated rollout does not mean every device can run every local feature. Check Google’s current Chrome Help requirements for device eligibility.

How to delete Chrome’s on-device AI models
- In Chrome, open Settings.
- Select AI Innovations, then On-device AI.
- Switch the setting off. Chrome deletes the on-device generative AI model files and will not download them again while the setting remains off. Features that rely on those models stop working.
Google says this setting is the only supported method for managing generative AI models. Manually locating or deleting model files is not recommended and may not prevent them downloading again if the setting allows it. Also, turning this setting off does not disable every AI feature in Chrome: features that do not rely on these on-device models may continue to work. See Manage on-device Generative AI models in Chrome.

Gemini in Chrome availability
Gemini in Chrome is gradually rolling out, rather than being available to everyone. Google lists supported region and language, a Chromebook Plus, Mac, or Windows computer, a current version of Chrome, sign-in, and a minimum-age condition among its requirements. It is unavailable in Incognito mode; work or school accounts may need administrator access. Check Google’s Gemini in Chrome availability details for the current conditions.

Work and school accounts
For managed accounts, Google states: “Your prompts and the data Gemini in Chrome reads while browsing are not used to train Google’s public models.” This applies to the managed protections described by Google, not automatically to consumer accounts. Enterprise protections and controls depend on the feature and configured policy; other Google AI products reached through Chrome may have different terms. Administrators can consult Google’s Chrome generative AI features and policies, privacy and security information, and Chrome policy documentation.
Auto browse
Auto browse is not synonymous with local on-device processing. Google describes it as experimental and warns that web pages can contain prompt injection. The agent may access signed-in sites and share information with websites to complete tasks; Google also warns about mistakes or unexpected results. Supervise it, especially for sensitive or important tasks. See Google’s auto browse guidance.
