Start with the game’s own settings, then check whether the issue is specific to your controller, display setup, or a particular transition. Resident Evil 5 (RE5) and Resident Evil 6 (RE6) have separate settings and community-documented fixes; don’t assume a fix for one applies to the other.
First identify the problem and the game
Before changing settings or files, note which title you’re playing, where you bought it, your Windows version, controller model and connection method, and your display setup. Then classify the symptom:
- Input: the controller is not recognized, buttons are mapped unexpectedly, or controls behave differently in menus and gameplay.
- Display: resolution or another video setting does not match your monitor or preference.
- Brief slowdown: performance drops around a menu, loading screen, or when switching away from the game and back.
This distinction matters because the available instructions are game-specific, and the documented sources do not establish one fix sequence that works for every store build, Windows setup, controller, and display.
Change controller layouts in Resident Evil 5

Set expectations for Resident Evil 6 controller support
Steam labels RE6 as “Partial Controller Support” and identifies Xbox controllers on its store listing. That label does not promise compatibility with every controller model, connection method, or remapping setup. If input is the problem, check the game’s controller options and the listing before trying a community workaround; confirm that any proposed fix covers your particular controller and version. Check video settings before applying a performance fix
For either game, begin with the in-game video settings and inspect the available display choices. PCGamingWiki lists video settings for RE5 and RE6, but the available evidence does not establish a universally optimal preset for modern PCs. Understand the reported RE6 transition slowdown
PCGamingWiki notes a brief heavy CPU load in RE6 during some menu, alt-tab, and loading transitions, describing it as lasting about five seconds. This is a community-reference observation, not a general benchmark or a guarantee that every slowdown has the same cause. A practical troubleshooting order
- Confirm the title and setup. Record RE5 or RE6, the store build, Windows version, controller model and connection method, and display setup.
- For input problems, check the game-specific controller options. In RE5, use Options > Controller Settings to change the layout, then test it in gameplay. For RE6, remember that Steam’s support label is partial.
- For display concerns, inspect the in-game video settings. Change settings in response to a specific symptom rather than relying on a supposed universal preset.
- For a persistent issue, consult the correct game’s PCGamingWiki page. Check the current compatibility and instructions for any community fix before modifying files.
- Reassess the symptom. In RE6, a short slowdown around a menu, alt-tab, or loading transition is different from consistently poor performance during play.
