To keep an AI browser from sending sensitive page content to its cloud service, stop the assistant from accessing the page, turn off the assistant or its browsing permission, or use a non-AI browser for sensitive work. Incognito mode and “don’t train on my data” settings are not reliable substitutes: they do not necessarily prevent cloud processing needed to answer a request.
What to turn off: page access, not just history or training
AI features can receive different kinds of browser context: the current page, highlighted text, other shared tabs, history URLs, or content the assistant finds while browsing. The relevant control is the one that limits what the feature can read or share. A promise not to use information for model improvement addresses a different issue from sending it to a service so the feature can work.
Before asking an assistant about sensitive material, check whether the page or tab is marked as shared. If the feature can browse or take actions, also consider whether it can navigate authenticated sites. For highly sensitive sessions, the clearest practical boundary is to use a separate browser without the AI feature; that choice does not establish that all browser networking or telemetry is disabled.
Stop Gemini in Chrome from sharing a tab
Turn off automatic sharing
- In Chrome, open Settings → AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome.
- Turn off Share current tab by default.
- Before using Gemini, check the chat’s shared-tabs control and confirm that the sensitive tab is not attached.
Google says Gemini in Chrome processes the content and URL of the current tab and other tabs shared with it. Shared content may not all be visible in the browser interface. If you have already shared a tab in an active conversation, open the shared-tabs control and remove that tab; changing the default does not itself remove context already attached to a chat. See Google’s Gemini in Chrome help.

Turn off autonomous browsing if needed
If your concern includes Gemini navigating sites rather than only reading a tab you provide, turn off the Let Gemini browse for you permission in the Gemini in Chrome settings. Do not invoke an agent on a site where it could access sensitive signed-in information unless you intend to grant that access. Settings and availability can vary by platform, region, and rollout.
History search and activity are separate controls
Google says that when a user searches Chrome history through Gemini, relevant history URLs are also collected. Google’s privacy information distinguishes website information, audio, and files shared with Gemini—which may be stored in Gemini Apps Activity when Keep Activity is on—from page content, which it says is temporarily logged to the Google Account and does not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. Those storage and activity details do not prevent a page from being processed when shared with the feature. See Google’s Gemini in Chrome privacy information.

For organization-managed Chrome
Administrators can configure Gemini integrations in the Admin console at Devices → Chrome → Settings → Generative AI → Gemini integrations. Google’s policy documentation makes an important distinction: data may still be sent to Google for an AI feature to operate even when a policy prevents that data from being used to improve Google models. Ask the administrator what the specific policy blocks before treating it as a no-transfer setting. See Google’s Chrome enterprise policy information.
Disable Brave Leo or limit what it can see
Brave says Leo sends prompts and conversation context to its backend for general chat. For page summaries and suggested questions, it sends the prompt and page content, including highlighted text; tab-management or history features may also send titles and URLs. Its privacy policy says prompts and context are not retained on its servers, except that large prompts may be briefly cached and deleted within minutes. Conversation history is stored locally unless Sync is enabled. These are Brave’s statements about its service and retention, not a claim that the content stays on the device.

Turn Leo off
Brave’s help instructions say Leo can be disabled in Settings so it no longer appears in the sidebar or search suggestions. The same instructions describe Clear Leo data as removing local conversations and resetting opt-in status. Check the current settings labels in your version of Brave, since menus can change. Disabling the feature is a stronger, simpler boundary than relying on whether an individual prompt includes page context. See Brave’s Leo help and privacy information.
Brave describes AI browsing as opt-in, manually invoked, and run in an isolated browser profile. Isolation may limit access to logged-in state in the main profile, but it is not local-only inference: Brave separately describes cloud requests for Leo. The company also warns that safeguards do not eliminate risks such as prompt injection. See Brave’s explanation of AI browsing.

Incognito does not mean no cloud processing
Incognito or private browsing primarily changes what is saved locally and, depending on the product, how activity is linked to an account. It does not automatically stop an AI assistant from receiving page content that you share with it. OpenAI’s Atlas documentation stated, “Incognito doesn’t make you invisible to ChatGPT or the rest of the internet.” Treat that as a useful reminder about the limits of private windows, not as a universal description of every browser’s private-mode implementation. See OpenAI’s Atlas data-controls guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Training choices and data deletion do different jobs
- Page-sharing controls govern whether the assistant can receive page or tab context for a request.
- Training or model-improvement controls govern whether data may be used to improve models; they do not necessarily prevent processing to provide the feature.
- Activity and retention controls govern what is saved in account activity or on the device, and for how long.
- Clearing history or conversations may remove stored records, but does not undo a cloud request that has already happened.
OpenAI’s Atlas documentation described page-visibility settings that stopped ChatGPT from reading page contents for on-page assistance and prevented new Browser memories for a site, while Browser memories themselves had separate controls. It also described on-device summaries on macOS 26, so web contents would not be sent to OpenAI servers for summarization. These are historical Atlas controls, not instructions for a currently supported browser.

Atlas instructions are now legacy guidance
OpenAI’s Help Center said ChatGPT Atlas was scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026. That date has passed, so Atlas should not be treated as a current browser option. OpenAI advised users to move to a supported browser experience and treat cookie and session files as sensitive; it also noted that ChatGPT conversation history is separate from Atlas browser data. See OpenAI’s Atlas discontinuation notice.
A practical checklist for sensitive browsing
- Identify the feature. A sidebar chat, page summarizer, search assistant, and autonomous agent may have different permissions.
- Block page context first. Turn off default tab sharing, remove attached tabs, or block page visibility where the product offers that control.
- Check agent access. Disable browsing permissions or avoid invoking an agent while signed in to sensitive accounts.
- Use a non-AI browser or separate profile for highly sensitive sessions. This is an isolation choice, not proof that all network activity is disabled.
- Review retention separately. Account activity, local history, conversation deletion, and stopping a new transmission are distinct actions.
- On managed devices, confirm policy scope. Ask an administrator whether a policy blocks feature processing or only model improvement.
Controls for Gemini in Chrome and Brave Leo are documented by their vendors, but availability and menu labels can change. Controls for every other AI browser are not established here; do not assume one vendor’s setting applies to another product.
