To wind and set an automatic watch, use its crown—but check the instructions for its exact model or movement first. Crown positions, winding direction, and safe times for adjusting the date vary. On the Seiko and Citizen movements cited below, wrist movement winds the mainspring and the crown can be used to wind a stopped watch.
Before you turn the crown
Find the watch’s model or caliber on its caseback, tag, or product documentation, then consult the manufacturer’s instructions. Citizen offers instruction lookup by caliber or model, and Rolex publishes model-specific guides. The examples below explain why those instructions matter; they are not universal procedures.
If the crown screws into the case, release it before operating it. Seiko’s Cal. 6R15 instructions say to unscrew the crown counterclockwise. When you finish, press it back in and screw it clockwise without forcing it. Follow your watch’s own directions, and do not operate the crown while the watch is wet if its manufacturer warns against doing so.
How to wind a stopped automatic watch
On the cited automatic models, movement of the wearer’s arm winds the mainspring. A stopped watch can also be wound at the crown, but the direction and recommended amount depend on the caliber.

- Seiko Cal. 6R15: With the crown in its normal position, turn it slowly clockwise. Turning it counterclockwise does not wind this movement. Seiko reports about 50 hours of operation after a full wind for this caliber.
- Citizen Cal. 0200: Its abbreviated instructions direct slow clockwise winding at position 0. Citizen says about 45 crown turns fully wind a stopped watch, providing about 60 hours of operation when fully wound.
- Citizen Cal. 8200/8210: The manual recommends winding 5 to 10 times at the normal crown position to start the watch.
These turn counts and operating times apply to the named calibers, not to automatic watches generally. If the crown feels unusually resistant or the watch does not respond as its manual describes, stop rather than force it.
How to set the date and time
Crown clicks and calendar operations differ between movements. First identify the crown positions in your watch’s manual; the examples below show why guessing can cause mistakes.

Seiko Cal. 6R15
Seiko’s instructions use the first crown click to set the date and the second click to set the time. Do not quick-set the date between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m., the caution period specified for this caliber.
To establish a.m. or p.m., advance the hands until the date changes. That date change identifies the a.m. period; continue advancing the hands to the correct time. If a.m. and p.m. are set incorrectly, the date may change around noon rather than midnight.

Citizen Cal. 8200/8210
Citizen’s manual uses a different numbered crown-position scheme and describes separate day and date operations. Its date-setting caution period also depends on the calendar: 9 p.m. to 10 a.m. for date-only models, and 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for day/date models. Use the procedure and caution period for the exact watch rather than applying Seiko’s timings to it.
Finish by securing the crown
Return the crown to its normal position as directed by the manual. If it is screw-locking, press it in and screw it back in gently as specified for the watch. Avoid forcing a crown that will not seat or turn normally.

Why the exact movement matters
Seiko describes the Cal. 6R15 as “an automatic watch equipped with a manual winding mechanism.” That statement applies to the named caliber; it does not establish the winding method for every automatic watch. The manufacturer’s instructions are the reliable guide to your watch’s crown, calendar, and winding procedure.
